In another thread, runaway diesels were mentioned. If any of you would like to see a runaway diesel check out Utube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KqQVk3WV2PU). This was staged by a diesel repair school to both show the students what a runaway diesel was like and to tear it up so the students could repair it. The ONLY way to shut down a runaway diesel is to remove the air or remove the fuel. If it is sucking oil, removing the fuel is not possible until it runs out of oil and then the engine is toast. If a stuck injector rail is the culprit, shutting down the flow of fuel will stop it if caught quick enough. Otherwise, you need to stop the air flow. That is a problem (from a safety standpoint) in that you would have to remove the air filter and put something solid over the air intake or try putting/holding something very nonporous and sturdy over the air intake holes around the air cleaner while an engine is run out of control.
