Holding tank vent

The holding tank vent on my '76 is a 1 1/4 in pipe that just vents down toward the street about 6" below the tank. We smell the tank in the park when downwind and even sometimes while driving. Having found no leak, I'm guessing that while driving, the wind across the vent actually drives the smell up into the coach.

I think the the vent should be up through the coach to the roof. It appears that there may be a box cut out of the bathroom for that purpose. Could someone with a 70's coach confirm that their vent leads up through the bathroom to the roof.

Yes Ted you are right. My '78 had a 1 1/4" pvc pipe vented through the roof.

Attached are some photos. It appears that there is two vents 1"1/4 pvc. One on the roof that may generate some pressure as the forward hole is sightly larger than the aft hole and it is in-line with the airflow. The second vent is off the Bathroom Lav and exits on the upper right side of the coach.. See photos.

Wow! wish my roof was that shiny! Next project- cleaning and polishing the roof. May take a rubbing compound to remove all of the oxidized paint.

jimmys is newly shiney. he is on a total restoration and is doing an AMAZING job at it.

I had a 78 sometime back and it was vented through the roof and we did not have any odors when parked or on the road.

Thanks for the Positive Reinforcement, Folks! I have a small problem with leaving things be... But, hopefully the next time I take the little bride for a ride.. we'll get past the Front Gate!... or I may be in trouble!

My 71 has both tank vent and drain vents on the side of the coach at the drip ledge along the roof. The tank vent if toward the front of the coach with the drain vent about 5' behind. I replaced the tank on our coach with a new tank during restoration and the tank vent is a trick to install without removal of floor, insulation and sheetmetal liner that is under the coach. To remove the old tank from the vent line we used a hole saw and cut out the tank fitting from the top of the tank from the inside of the old tank by removing the bottom of the tank. Reinstallation of the vent line to the new tank was accomplished by installation of a theaded pipe adapter in the tank, gluing the adapter and then elevating the tank and hitting the vent stub exactly causing the two to join. It worked well but location of stub and fitting have to be exact. May reason for the drop tube vent described. The old vent is probably still up there and R & R of the tank could allow reconection of line. When originaly built it had a tank vent. Happy to tell you what it took to replace mine.
