~ Slow leak in tire linked to fatal Greyhound bus crash of August 06 ~

RAYBROOK, N.Y. - Greyhound bus that crashed last August was one of the worst accidents
on New York highways in decades.

Announcing the results of the police investigation into the crash, December 5, New York
State Police Maj. Richard C. Smith Jr. said a slow leak in the tire led to the tragedy.

According to the report, the front left tire, losing pressure and heating up from the friction
on the highway, finally blew as the driver was passing a tractor-trailer near Elizabethtown,
174 kilometers north of Albany.

Smith added that neither Burgess nor anyone else, could have been expected to detect
the tiny puncture that began the chain reaction. The driver's excessive speed may have
contributed to the magnitude of the accident, but it was not a cause.

''I want to believe his actions helped to save lives,'' Smith said. ''Going from 78 miles per
hour to zero in six seconds, there's a lot of energy that has to be dissipated. It could have
been much worse.''
