hi,

i replaced my merge solenoid today and when cleaning the back electrical panels i saw the starter solenoid looks to be very old. no marks on it, am i to assume it is the same cole hersee 24106 that the merge solenoid is?

it looks the same.

i did some before and after pictures of the two electrical panels. they were really dirty. the starter solenoid is in the lower right of the last picture.

So, did you just pressure wash the panel?

Just kidding.

Tom,

The electric panel looks great.

What did you use to get it so clean? I'd like to do mine.

Tom,

The way the picture posted the starter solenoid is in the upper right I think. It certainly is fair to call it the starter solenoid, but it is not the only one and not the one that does the heavy lifting. The solenoid that actually connects the starter motor to the starting batteries is mounted on the side of the starter. The one on the panel just energizes the big guy. So the duty cycle and current carried by the one in the picture is far less than the duty and current carried by the merge solenoid - even thought they may be the same part.
My merge solenoid was toast when I got my coach, but I have had no probems at all with the solenoid in your picture. Should it fail I would just jump across it long enough to start the engine and replace it at that time.

i used almost full strength simple green and a lot of elbow grease. i did find a loose wire i repaired as well.

i also did the compartment in front of the drivers steer tire where the hydraulics is for the slides. that was a greasy mess. i will need to do it again, but it is a ton cleaner.

i am working my way through it all. i did a first pass degreasing of the engine as well. after i get it looked at by my bus mechanic and some maintainence done and the seal changed on the alternator i will pressure wash the engine and give it a fresh coat of detroit diesel series 60 blue. i bought two cans of it at the detroit dealer last week. i know i am crazy.

i will do the aquahot and opposite water pump bay as i fix both of them.

yea, i know the starter solenoid just energizes the main starter solenoid because the wires were too small on it.

it almost looks original. i am guessing it is the same so i will just replace it too.

thanks

tom
