i need to fix the electric window shade at the drivers window. no 12v at the wires coming out. so i took the cover off where the inverter control panel and speakers are. the ads speaker crossover is there and a number of relays. i assume the ones with the speaker wires coming out of them are to switch the speakers from home theatre to car stereo. they are 12v. however there is a 120v relay with 14 gauge wires coming out of it. it is humming so i will get another but what in the world it is for? it is the relay on the left in the picture below?

here is a better picture of the relays. i am still trying to figure out what the 110v relay on the left is for.

anyone know?

I know you probably tried to trace the output.

What tells the speaker relays to turn on and off, to convert from dash stereo to entertain system stereo?

Richard,

On mine, with the receiver that came from Newell, there was an auxiliary 115vac output that turned on when the receiver was turned on. They simply wired a plug onto the coil wires of a 115vac relay and plugged it in - worked like a charm. Well, that is until I had to change the receiver to something more modern and neglected to get one with an auxiliary 115vac output. I bought a switch with a remote control ( IR ) and I just turn it on and off as necessary to switch the speakers now.

OK, that makes sense. The aux out 110 plug on the receiver was used as the trigger for the relay(s). The relays would be normally on the dash unit, unless the receiver was on. Cool.

that makes alot of sense. now i will have to go look. i took the marantz receiver out already and it did not have anything plugged into the switched outlet (yea it had one).

nor was there a trigger wire on it.

i will have to look and really trace the wires out now.

thanks russ.

now i gotta get to much more tracing. a cursory look has 4 wires coming off of the relay. all 4 go into nomans land. and the two that look to be the control lines go up in the overhead and appear to go down from there.

i clearly had nothing that plugged into the back of the receiver unless it is totally hiding in there, but i looked pretty good.

another case of how things were done differently between coaches.

ok, i got it figured out. i bought a new kenwood head unit to replace the car stereo. as i was wiring it up, i saw that the old one had a wire connected to the 12v signal that turns on an auxiliary amplifier. but....there was no amplifier to be found. the wire was blue with a white stripe. i looked at the relays that trigger the speakers and walla, it was the same wire. the default position is that the home theatre has the speakers. when you turn the car stereo on, the 12v that is used to turn on an aux amp is energized and it clicks the 2 speaker relays and the car stereo now has the speakers.

that said, i still dont know what the 120v relay is for.....

one thing at a time. it is nice to have a car stereo with bluetooth and streaming audio from my phone built it.

Tom,

Glad you got that little mystery solved. Knew the signal had to come from the surround receiver or the dash receiver. So, I assume you just did the same thing with your new car stero.

My dash receiver has GPS, but I don't use it. It is DVD based and too difficult and expensive to keep up to date. There is one feature of my dash unit I particularly like and that is the ability to control it without taking my hands from the wheel. I have attachd a photo. I don't know for sure where you mounted your new one, but the overhead location of mine would be a pain in the rear to deal with while driving.
