So just in case there are any young bucks out there following Tom's most wonderfull adventure, take under advisement that it takes years to work a wife up to this tolerance level. They must witness many, many disassembles and successful reassembles of a smaller nature before they don't shoot you over something like you see in the pictures.

had a friends wife look inside this week. she rolled her eyes and asked if there was any way i could get it all back together.

darlene is confident i can. ha

i took the rest of the slide area apart. the window seems to have leaked at the bottom two corners. i am going to cut the plywood out of the wall and replace it. should be fairly straight forward.

Richard, that is a very witty, and insightful comment.....no doubt you speak from massive experience.....lol!

today forest and i did some real demolition and more disassembly.

we took the rest of the side panels off and cut out the bad sections of wall board and floor. it is clear that the window leaked at the bottom corners as there was no water marks above the radius of the bottom two corners. we used a multifunction tool to cut it out. worked great and no dust. cleaned it up, scraped off the top mildew and sprayed it down with white vinegar. am letting it set now with a fan running. the insulation was wet and we had not had a rain in weeks. wet just at the bottom right corner.

having it all apart will help me design the bed especially since i know no where the hydraulic ram is for the slide and will make an access panel for it under the bed. i know it looks like a mess, but it really is no big deal. putting in the new wood will be a piece of cake and i will find the leak first and repair it. besides it never rains in arizona....

forest is a great help so will be sad to see them leave next week. (besides they are fun to be around).

i will get the wood cut and in next week and bed designed and hopefully will get the cabinet guy to start on the bed and nightstands.

btw, from these pictures you can see that wallpaper can hide alot of stuff. if i had not pulled the wallpaper back where it was peeling a little, i would not have seen all the water damaged wood.

Will work for parking!
Seriously, it's been a lot of fun this week at Tom & Darlene's house. I had some maintenance work done at Tom's local bus repair facility and took some pictures of the underside of the coach while it was suspended in the air.
I've been having a lot of fun helping Tom with the demo/repairs, wire pullin', etc. in his new coach. Really nice coach and can't wait to see the finished product. Alas we leave tomorrow for Cotttonwood where we'll store the coach for a few months while we head home for birthdays, weddings, and other stuff.

hi all, could someone please measure the depth of the nightstands/end tables next to each side of the bed please in a similar vintage with a bedroom slide?

thanks

Tom, if you still have access, I would hit that mold area with some bleach spray also, to make sure those spores are knocked out.

Not really familiar with the use of vinegar, but I know the bleach will kill it.

It's sure a good thing these things are framed out in metal, or you would have nothing left of that slide. I have a '99 Lance Slide in truck camper with a little rot in the back rear corner, one of my first projects after retirement will be to pull the Philon off and tackle rebuilding the wood frame on that corner. If it were aluminum like the newer Lances, it would be simple, but if it's too extensive it may be junk. It's my fishing rig when I go alone and don't want to take the Newell. After 12 years it has served us well, but would hate to have to junk it, as it is still very nice everywhere else.

Great work on yours, and you are an inspiration for me to go ahead and start my camper.

Thanks

i may even take the foam out and refoam it. not sure yet. evidently white vinegar is supposed to work better than bleach. i soaked it pretty good.

water ingress....

i have water coming in a few places.

so, i am resealing all the windows. for some goofy reason, mine were put in with the butyl tape. i put all new windows in my 90 so am pretty experienced with putting them in. the way to install them is with foam tape. that is what the manufacturer recommends. so, i cleaned all the ooze off (took me hours) and used pinstriping tape around the corners and masking around the rest to get a clean seal line. i talked to tommy at newell and he said they use sikaflex polyurethane to seal the windows, so my bus shop had it so i got some tubes of it from him today.

i did the passenger side tonite before dark for masking and will get up early in the morning and do the caulking.

next will be the drivers side.

i bought a new scaffolding set at harborfreight and it is awesome for this. i just sat on the scaffold and did the windows.

i also found a leak at the mirrors. that is where my water damage is from up front. i will take them off and reseal them. for them you need to use butyl tape. i did the same on my 90.

i have my bed and nightstands just about all designed. i have a buddy who is going to build the bed for me. he is a master crafstman. the nighstands i am having a cabinet guy do.

it was a trick to design the bed to make it able to be removed. my bedroom slide is a flat floor one so different than most of yours.

i bought UHMW natural 1/2" plastic sheet (expensive stuff) to cut into strips to put on the bottom of the bed to help it glide smoothly across the carpet.

am doing alot of things in parallel to get ready for our first big roadtrip to ohio at the end of june.

thanks to all of you for your ideas and advice.

So you're able to reseal the windows without removing them? Awesome, that'll save a ton of work!

encantotom
05-12-2012, 05:03 AM
yea. it is still alot of work to reseal them but most of the work is the cleaning and masking.

they will be fine.

i can still use alot of help forest. you can come back and stay for a few weeks....

michael will be here in a week and a half. michael are you ready to practice your finely honed newell skills?

status on bedroom construction. basic bed is done. laminate arrived and is ready to be put on the bed pedastal.

electric linear actuator arrived along with mounting hardware and switch.

today darlene and i went and spent hours at a custom mattress manufacturer. they would lay out different pieces of a mattress in different combinations till we found the one we like. they will make it and we will have it next saturday. we went with a high end latex. we got to try the different densities of latex and we liked the soft one. then tried different tops and liked the thickest, softest one. should be really nice. i went with 18" radius corners on the mattress to match the frame below. i know many of you have much more round beds, but i am fairly tall and wanted as much length as i could get. the mattress will be 82" long and 72" wide. kinda in between a king and cal king.

because i have cabinets at the end of the bed and only one slide, it will not be easy to walk around the end of the bed when the slide in retracted. not much i can do about that.

the bed pedastal is 12" high and with a 12" mattress will be 24" tall. exactly what we wanted.

i have a guy lined up to do the night stands to match the rest of the coach but cant get to it till late july.

the inside will be lined with gray/black trunk carpet and the outside of the frame will be covered in a laminate that is the same pattern but a medium gray instead of black like alot of the rest of the coach. it will look very nice.

the bottom of the bed has 4" pieces of UHMW 1/2" plastic that has the corners rounded. it is slippery food grade plastic that makes the bed glide on the carpet easily.

getting there.

had a mattress custom made here locally. we were able to go to the factory and they laid out different pieces of different densities till we got the feel we liked. we got a latex foam mattress.

they did a really nice job on it.

here is a picture..

Got a chuckle out of that picture. Is there any room in your home that doesn't contain a Newell part?

i dont think the home theater room does but i would have to go double check.

only 8 of our rooms have newell parts in them. so only a little more than a 1/3rd of the house.

my buddy garry came over and spent a long day working on the bed. he got it laminated and the rest of it structurally built.

he is coming over tomorrow to finish it enough to use. we laminated the back wall with the same laminate that the bed is and the nightstands will be.

a bunch of pictures are attached.

ok, bed is in. it is done except for lining the inside with carpet and putting the linear actuator in to raise the bed platform. i have the actuator, but no time to install it.

i put most of the bedroom back together but still have to put the back valence in yet.

darlene custom fit the mattress cover, sheets and blanket.

gettin there!

Lookin' Good Tom! That was quite the undertaking...and it was great that you shared with all of us! Thanks!

One question though....What keeps the mattress on the platform? (Mine has a lip that goes all the way around)

Cheers,

Looks awesome Tom, let the magic begin!

encantotom
06-27-2012, 03:12 PM
bill,

the simple answer is friction

i looked at the newell bed designs that had the lip and with my extra big behind i didnt want to sit on the lip. steve bare's bed does have the lip so i copied his.

it aint going anywhere. if it does slide, i will put carpet on the top of it.

Newell puts clear silicone on the box portion of the bed. They just squeeze it in the form of an "S" all over the bed box frame. This prevents the mattress from sliding off. No need for a lip; the mattress stays in place.

Simplicity is the key!

Tom, you have a real bedroom. That looks great. I know you will enjoy sleeping on your new bed much more than on the couch that was in there. Have a great trip.

My bed has the silicone S's and the mattress creeps down toward the foot of the bed every night leaving a gap between the mattress and the headboard large enough for my pillow to drop into. I may try Tom's idea of carpeting so see if that holds better.

encantotom
06-27-2012, 10:09 PM
on my 90 i put new carpeting on the deck of the bed. the mattress didnt move at all.

will see if this one moves. i really doubt it, but if it does i will put carpet on it as well.

the carpet i used was a thick plush

I wonder if something like this would work better? I have it under an area rug and it works great and won't slip on a hardwood floor.
