i have just started suing my 02 after doing some updating and repairing of it for some time. i have to admit i was a little disappointed as to how much noise there was when i drove it. most particularly was a loud rattling coming from the slide areas.

for those of you without slides, you will be glad to not have to fiddle with them.

in my mind it sounded like the slide locking ;pin at the top reattling inside the locking hole in the slide that keeps the slide in when retracted.

i was trying to figure out what i could do to fix it. when i got to newell and they worked on it on tuesday, i asked them about it and told them i thought it was the slide pin rattling around. they quickly said yes it was and that there was rubber bushings in the holes they could replace and it would fix it. i had been up there and there was NO rubber bushings in mine. evidently one of two things happens. either they come out and fall off or they just plain wear out and fall apart and come out over time and use.

they scrapped out what was left and inserted the new bushings and then used the slide itself to have the locking pin further compress it into the holes.

it made a HUGE difference in noise inside the coach. now the slides are quiet and i can begin looking for the rest of the noises that happen when we travel.

i got 4 spare bushings and they put them in the sack that had the part number on it from hwh so you will see that in the picture.

thought those of you with slides might be interested in this info.

Tom,

When I purchased my 1999 Newell it was making a rattling sound around the top of front slides. Newell changed the bushings and I have been "good to go since".

I am going to keep that part number handy: HWH # 704250 (Is that correct ?) Bumper Neoprene AP 13046 HWH

Good post, thanks!

Here is a picture of what was left of the neopreme locking pin bumpers in my bedroom slide. I found a similar material in the front slide locking pin holes. I was able to clean out the locking pin hole with a very small screwdriver as the rubber material is very sticky.

I called HWH and was advised that neither part number was a HWH number. Angela had never heard of locking pin bumpers. I emailed her the pictures Tom had posted and she is researching.

that clearly looks like the material that the new bushings are made out of. interesting that hwh doesnt have any knowledge of them. at least i know you can get them from newell. i didnt look at how much they charged me for them. i could not find that part number anywhere on the web either.

Did I transcribe the numbers correctly from your picture of the HWH plastic bag ?

Tom, Tuga and Steve, I have a banging noise above and behind the driver's seat which I cannot fine. It is something that sounds like a large piece of metal or wood whenever I hit a sharp bump (a heavy sound). If it is convenient, can you post a picture or description of how to get to this bushing.

chester, that is exactly the noise i had. on top of the slides on the outer edge is the hole that the locking pin goes in. it is a metal insert. the rubber bushing goes inside that metal hole. then the pin when it inserts goes inside that bushing giving it some cushion.

here is a picture of the hole.

the washer like thing is the rare earth magnet that the hwh sensor requires to put the pins down. you may or may not have that as some use microswitches elsewhere.

It is interesting to know that Newell uses rare earth magnets to retract the pins back into the slides.

I have invested in several "rare earth element" mining stocks hoping that one day I might make a good return on my investment.

Thanks for the post!

actually the rare earth magnets are to sense when the slide is fully retracted and then allowing the pins to come down. there is a hall effect sensor mounted in the slide pin mechanism on mine that senses the magnetic field from the magnet to close the circuit to lock the pins. i believe yours uses microswitches. it is an hwh thing. they seemed to change quite often how they did it. the magnets come off and i have had to replace some. i got them from grainger.

Chuck from Newell parts got some more bushings from HWH yesterday. He shipped mine out yesterday & I received them today--I live just 100 miles from Newell. Cost was $16.80 a piece, $10 handling and $8.06 shipping. The bushings are $14 from HWH, but after receiving an email that they were in stock I am yet to receive a phone call from HWH parts. When I made a followup call to HWH the operator said that parts is way behind. I'm not too impressed with HWH's customer service.

my generator uses the same mechanism as the slide. question is should it have a bushing in it as well?
