We love our newell coach but the mattress that came in it is killing my back. It old and used and needs a replacement pronto! Can anyone suggest a place to get mattresses that will fit in the coach? Other than a regular mattress store? Do any RV supply places carry mattresses that aren't 2" thick?. Thanks!

We first added the foam padding you can buy from WalMart. Square cut not the egg shell. This helped a good bit.
Later saw a memory pad at Sam's or Costco ($90 I think it was) and bought that. We put this over the foam we first bought at WalMart. Bed now sleeps pretty durn good.

I have seen several advertisments on matress including air memory ones. Now that we added the padding, we do not feel that we need to spend the high cost some are asking.

What style mattress do you have now? Is it shaped like a regular mattress or is the what I call keyhole shape? I did away with ours and its up in our shop attic. I ordered another mattress that is square and queen size. I will have to look and find the name of the place I ordered from and let you know if interested

The mattress in our Newell is one of the things we like most about it. Newell makes their own mattresses that are custom fit for your particular coach. They are 5" or 6" rubber foam and are very comfortable. The foot of the mattress is curved to facilitate walking around it and this cut corner is very important in a coach that has a rear slideroom.

If I were you I would contact Newell service and price a new mattress that is custom cut for your Newell. We love ours and it is 14 years old. It is still firm and gives great support. Just one more example of Newell quality.

Thank you all who replied. I'm sorry I didn't give more info. (that would have helped) I have a 90 newell and it's a queen bed, square style.

Wally, I don't think foam padding would help. It's that bad!

Pam, if you have the info handy please post it here. The more info I can get the sooner my back will be feeling better. So any help would be great!

Tuga, has newell always custom made mattresses for the newells? I don't think this old mattress is custom made. Maybe the owners before removed the original and put this one in here?

Either way it's got to go ASAP!

Here is the website that I ordered ours from. You can call and talk with them also. http://www.replacement-mattress.com/RV/rv-mattress-reg.htm We have been pleased with ours!
You can order cut corners for more room, several options and sizes to choose from or give them your own measurements.

We have the rectangular mattress in our Newell so we tossed the rock hard mattress that the previous owner had installed and bought a Queen memory foam mattress from Costco. It was a significant improvement. Paid about $500. Still use it 6 years later and still find it comfortable.

Try the memory foam. We love ours and they don't cost all that much for the benefit.

Pam, thanks for the link. I'll check it out.

Thank you everyone else for the idea of memory foam.

I've heard they take some time getting used too?

It took several days for the odor to go away but the comfort was there for us immediately.

We have a queen memory foam at home and in our coach. We bought one for home first and ended up liking it so much we bought one for the coach too. I agree with Michael it does take maybe a week or so before the odor goes way and don't be surprised because it's pretty strong. For the wife it was comfort right away. I on the other hand had a little bit of an adjustment but not to long after I found it to be very comfortable as well.

All the mattresses in our household are now the memory foam type. In the last Newell we had a Serta spring coil and it was hard but a quality mattress. At first we put an egg crate foam liner on top and that wasn't too bad, until I purchased a high end memory foam mattress for home to try out. At first the memory foam seemed way too hard, then I started getting used to it and whenever we would sleep in the coach or at a Hotel it was hard to sleep and I had to revert back to the extra pillow thing under knee portion of the legs. The memory foam is nice as it forms nicely to the body.

Now, you have to figure out what density you like, just like with a coil spring bed. Our first memory foam mattress in the home had only been used for about six months and is now used by our youngest still living at home. We have changed brands twice and went to a softer one, which ended up too soft and is now in the guest room. In our home we have about one of every density now. We finally settle for one in between the density and it works great. So, the next Newell will get one just like it. That way it won't be like going to a hotel/motel and having to make the change.

Like Michael stated it takes a few days to get used one. I don't even use a pillow when laying on my back and it actually helps my neck that has plenty of scar tissue. I still need a pillow for supporting my head while laying on my side though.

As some of you might say, just my 2 cents worth.

Ken, thank you for your two cents. It's greatly appreciated, I haven't purchased a new mattress for the coach yet.

Like you and others mentioned new mattresses take some time to adjust too. With all the talk on the foam mattress we went to a local mattress store so we could actually lay on some and test them out. Wow!, those prices vary on different types and brands. Most stores had some good sales going on for Labor Day but we had other things going on and didn't purchase one yet. Even with laying on different ones we still didn't find what we thought was the perfect one.

I wish they offered a rent a mattress haha... then maybe we could test one out for a few weeks to be sure.

I know the old one has to go and now I'm even considering a new one for home too. I just worry it might be too soft or too hard.

You can get a good quality foam mattress. For $500-$1,000. We have one and like it a lot better. Than the old spring mattress that we had. The odor lasted for a whole 10 minutes. After the mattress expanded it was gone.

As a matter of fact we slept on it that night. When we laid down it was comfortable. However when I woke up in the morning I felt like I had been hit by a truck! Leeann wasn't much better. This went on for a little over a week. But the soreness did stop. I think our bodies were adjusting from the springs to the foam.

Anyway the moral of the story is that we had it for about 3 months. Before our bodies were adjusted. Now we couldn't imagine not having it. I kick myself for not buying a foam mattress sooner. If you have been to a mattress store. Then you know that spring mattress cost the same as a foam.

It's time to replace our mattress. Been looking at a memory foam mattress from Mattress Insider. Has any one purchased one? Is it any good? They seem to offer a good return policy and a 20yr warranty on the 8" model.

We are new owners of a 92 Newell and found the same issue with our OEM mattress. We found a replacement which was custom-made to our dimensions and is made out of the memory foam material. Ours is referred to as a "Cool-Max" memory foam mattress from MattressInsider.com which actually wicks the heat from your body rather than heating up like some of the original memory foams. Like the other members stated, we let it set in the unit with the windows open in our storage building for a week or so and also allowed it to fully expand before using. I think ours was around $500-$600 but has been all the difference in the world on that bed. Here's the link to the one we chose....

Don't know if you already purchased a new mattress but thought I would leave a remark here. The mattress in our coach had already been replaced once but it was just a cheap coil mattress and was hard. We also went with a foam mattress and were very happy with it. There are many options available, you should be able to easily find one that will meet your needs. Getting a good night's sleep is important we all need our beauty rest!

Another thing to remember friends is that there are different kinds of sleepers. How you sleep is something you should consider when looking for a new mattress.

You have the Back sleepers, Side sleepers and Stomach sleepers.

If you are a person who mostly sleeps on your back then you will want to look for a mattress that offers a good amount of padding. It's easier on the back than a harder surface.

If you are one who sleeps on your side then you will want to lay, in the most natural position that you can. If you have a firm hard mattress this will cause you lots of discomfort and you'll most likely be tossing and turning all night. This will cause you very little sleep and what sleep you do get will not have been a sleep with much rest. So go with a softer mattress, such as a foam mattress.

And if you are a Stomach sleeper I feel sorry for your poor back! lol! Just kidding! We all need to sleep the way that is most comfortable. If you sleep on your stomach you want to away from a soft mattress because it will cause sagging that will arch your back in an uncomfortable position and you will literally have the "Ahhh, my aching back!" syndrome the next day. The best mattress for someone that is a stomach sleeper would be a medium firmness. It will provide adequate support for your middle section without arching your spine. Stay away from a super soft mattress and those pillow tops. If you go with a foam mattress you will want one that is on the firmer side.

If you are a person who sleeps both on your back and side then you may want to consider a foam mattress that isn't super soft but has a little firmness to it. It will be the most suitable for both ways of sleeping.

Comfort and rest are important to me so I can see the importance of wanting to replace your hard mattress! Sleeping on a bad mattress can cause back problems for many in the future. Hope you find one that is suitable for your needs.

Update on mattress purchase.

We finally made a decision on a foam mattress and purchased one as a Christmas present to ourselves. For us there was no odor or time with any aches or pains to adjust, maybe it was because my body was already hurting before we got this new mattress. lol!

I guess this mattress was made for us. :)

We ordered online and the price was $399.99 which we feel was a steal since the mattress at normal price was $1,900.00! With a 79% savings we are happy newellers who have gotten better sleep. We decided to go with the Sleep Innovations brand because everything we read about them was positive and the price on amazon was amazing. I figured how could we go wrong? So glad we took a chance because who knows how much longer I could take with our old hard mattress.

You can purchase the same mattress at Costco, Sams Club, Sears, Kohls and other retailers. But at Kohls it is $1,899.99 for the same exact queen mattress. Can't beat amazon on the price, plus we have a prime account so we also got 2 day free shipping! So waiting time was nil to none. Truly happy with Sleep innovations SureTemp Memory Foam Mattress and with a 20 year warranty we have no worries.

Thank you everyone for the help and input we really appreciate all the response. It really did help us do some research and we didn't jump the gun and buy the first mattresses we had seen. I like a deal so knowing that we have saved such a tremendous amount in my book and we are finally sleeping in such comfort is the best feeling. I highly recommend this mattress to anyone looking for better sleep every night!

Stewart that appears to be a great buy. Congrats and hope the night are much better for you.

Randy that could be an interesting question if you are out on the road. Probably the only good thing about buying a mattress at a physical store is that they well take the old one off your hands. But for a great savings I would figure how to dispose of it.

Thanks for the link and information on the great deal. I'm going to remember this for when we get a coach because the husband will not have sleeping on a used mattress. So I know for sure we will need to buy a new one. Our bed now is going to my sister so we will soon be in the market for a new one. Thanks again for the info and congrats on having better nights of rest. :)

When we cleared out the house for the sale we called the various agencies and Habitat Restore was the ONLY one that said they would take anything, even old mattresses!
So you could call the nearest Habitat Restore and they would probably take it.

Hope it helps!

We just purchased a used 1994 London Aire and the mattress that came with it is pretty discusting. My wife and I literally had to wear gloves and a mask when we were removing it lol.

We need a mattress with radius corners at the foot end otherwise there isn't enough room to walk around the bed. We're considering purchasing the same Coolmax mattress model that you did. It's been a few years now and I was hoping you could give some feedback. Is it still comfortable?

By the way, for anybody needing to measure their radius corners, they have a video at the bottom of their custom mattress (http://www.mattressinsider.com/custom-size-mattresses.html) page which I found helpful.
