Inverter Problem or Something Causing Inverter Problem

I am unable to get battery charge off of either generator or shore power.
The inverter has been sent in for repair.

It will tend to overheat. Another
symptom has been "flakey/fluctuating" power when operating off of
the inverter or the genset, when the inverter actually worked for
awhile. The batteries do charge from the alternator when I run the
engine.

Batteries have been serviced recently and have plenty of water but I don't know if they have
been tested for ability to hold or take a charge.

Have somebody do a voltage and current check on the inverter both the DC and AC side. Sounds to me that you are having inverter trouble. You might think about a new one. Might check to see that the inverter is not overloaded and too small for the power requirement. You might have an AC side short overloading it, the output current check would show that.
