How to change fuel filter without losing prime ?

I have a 1976 Newell with a Cummins diesel engine. The fuel filters are standard screw-on canister type. They are hanging above the level of the motor

Is there any way to change them without losing the prime?

Welcome Cliff,

Just Fill the filter as full as you can and thread it on. Fire the engine up and use a fair amount of rpm right from start. Presto change-o and no priming nightmare. Good Luck

This might be overkill for you, but i've found it saves me a lot of headaches. You can insert a little 12 volt rattle pump from NAPA in-line before (or even after) the filter and prime it that way. Disconnect the fuel line on the out-side of the filter, turn on the pump and purge the air out that way. Have a container to catch any fuel that comes out, reconnect the hose and you are air free.

Our '82 has a Pneumatic Governor. Like stated above prime the new filters but I also use the auxiliary compressor to make sure that I can use the throttle.
