1992, engine Detroit Diesel 8V92 (500hp), transmission Allison HT740 (I believe). I will have to confirm the transmission next time I have the rear end up enough that I can see what is the label says.

I have a 77 newell that had the triple nickle Cummins changed out for a 6V92T attached to a HT-740 tranny.

The 'Redhead' and I have the 1981 'Winter Demo Coach'. We aquired it in 1997, it is has a 6V92TA, 335 bhp, 1250 lb. ft. torque, and Jacobs engine brake, with a mated Allison MT654CR 5 speed automatic transmission, 3.70:1 rear axle ratio. We had the entire drive train checked over, engine in-frame overhaul, turbo rebuilt, jake brake verified, transmission and differential inspected. Because it was a demo coach apparently Newelled kept little or none of the engineering specs. I've created an Owners Manual and 3 O&M spec manuals, numerous electrical and plumbing schematics. At least now we kind of know what goes where. Having done this and other upgrades/fixes, we truly appreciate the Newell fabrication compared to other RV's in the industry. The wife and I look forward to reading and participating in the Forum.

I have 1976 38' with the Cummins V555 with a Allison 640 tranny updated to 643. This one is a bit slow off the line, but it goes 75mph all day long and at 10mpg on flat Eastern States roads. Try to get as much of the manuals and receipts as possible when you buy, the stack should be around 6 inches high!

Good luck to you in finding your Newell.

Detroit Diesel Series 60--Although Detroits have not been used for several years, look for them to come back & be the engine of choice in a more powerful configuration in future Newells.
Allison 6 speed HD 4060

My '78 had a 555Cummins/Allison 5 spd. Charlie is right about off-the line speed but it was more than adequate on the flat and sounded great...Kinda like a big block Chrysler on steroids!
My '93 has a 500hp DD 8V-92/Allison 740. Excellent power, smooth and very little smoke.

Our 1983 Newell has a 903 cummins and a HT 740 Allison transmission. I wonder how many other Newells were built with this engine and transmission?
