Now we have one without a reserve for our contest! It's at $16,500 right now with 14 bids and 3.5 days left. I'm putting my guess at $34,500.

No Reserve Used 44' Newell Detroit 470hp Diesel Full Paint Needs TLC Cheap REPO

This is coach approx 44'.This coach is a Newell. This coach is NOT nice as compared to a new unit. It is decent when compared to a new motorhome. To be 12 years old this coach is pretty nice. This RV was just driven several hundred miles with no trouble. This RV is pretty easy to drive. Only a regular drivers license is required to drive this coach. There are roof AC units that seem work. One of the thermostats is missing. We are not sure of all AC units working properly. This RV will need some updating. So, we plan to sell cheap to allow the next owner to update how they want it.The engine or dash AC does not blow cold air.The 8V-92 Detroit DIESEL engine runs as it should, a 470hp.The Allison toggle switch operated automatic overdrive transmission shifts great also, no problems. A diesel generator is present and trys to run. It seems that the fuel pump solenoid is bad.I am not sure that the convertors are charging properly. The invertors have a green light indicating they are on, but the batteries do not seem to keep a charge. The air takes a little while to build up pressure. Due to the age, I would imagine there are a few leaks in the air system. Once there is enough air pressure, the suspension is pumped up, including the tag axle, and the air brakes will turn off and we drove it approx 600 miles with no trouble at all. Please consider that it is 22 years old. This means the coach is not new so please do not expect new. There is a fridge / freezer that works on LP gas or electric. We did NOT check every single light, drawer, storage door latch etc. Hopefully, they are good. We feel that since this motorhome is a repo and we are selling for a low profit, we are NOT planning to check or go over everything. WE can not cover, repair, or go over it all and make very little or low profit. So, our theory is to sell a lot at very little profit. This is good for you because it gives you a chance to own a RV for a VERY LOW price.Since we are usually selling RVs for a low price, we feel that you can do some of the cleaning and repairs yourself or pay an RV store to do it for you. Typically, if you are willing to pay the Nada retail price we will be glad to cover or go over it all for you.As with any older RV, there is usually some delam or water damage.Sometimes we do not have all of the keys for each door, due to being a REPO.

I'm no expert but I no that it needs a lot of work, more than most would be willing to do. I think it could bring $36,000.

I think Ken is thinking to himself, I could pick that up and repower it with a Cummins ISX, add a couple of slides, change out the headlights to HIDs...:o

I wouldn't be interested not even @ 28K. Take a nice hard look and start to see what it could need I think 20-22K is where anyone would want to be in case major repairs come along(You know they will). I know your probably thinking I'm out of my mind but hey you could easily invest another 20K into it when I start thinking about tires, Batteries,Water heater, Generator needs repair, Interior, Exterior items that need attention and we haven't even started with any engine or air components. Also as Jon pointed out not including a new Cummins engine.

Jon, what are you trying to do, draw me into this one. They were asking like $50k previously and they will not get even close to this but they will find out the true ebay price on it letting it go. It will need all tires. I don't see the roof airs they mention it has. You are right about me yanking the engine, it is a perfect candidate for a newer I-6. Really be nice to have it inspected. The gen don't run, but that may be from sitting around, but then again why don't the sellers at least get that running? There are some features I find attractive but I would have to weigh them out against all the work it will need. This is a DIY Newell for someone like a handful of us around here wanting to save money by doing most all the work ourselves. This would take more $$ to pay someone else to do all the repairs, than what you can buy a much nicer cleaner Newell for. Rust is another concern. I believe there is another member on here that went and had this inspected a while back and opted out.

I will think on it a little and give my guess.

I'm thinking it needs a lot of work...and that means you better have some cash to fix it all...and the time. Or have plan on paying someone to do it and that adds up.

I should recantor my guess but I won't. I don't think its worth anywhere near my guess and just think somebody would be willing to go there not fully realizing what they are getting themselves into.

A relative of ours had went and look over this coach and this is what hess says about it:

Needs complete repaint (the pictures do not show how bad it is).
Carpet is needs replaced.
Figure on replacing all leather.
Dinette needs new upholstery and foam.
Figure on replacing all curtins and blinds.
Missing front TV and components.
There is a combo washer/dryer that will be removed.
Replace microwave.
Ice maker didn't look good.
Needs all the tires replaced before moving anywhere.
Does have electrical house issues.
Needs all new batteries.
Needs all windows and door resealing.
Needs new water tank and most likes water pumps.
Tanks should be removed to make need basement repairs.
Generator is unknown.
There are apparent oil leaks.
Engine has uncertanties.
HVAC fan has unknown sound and not functioning as it should, may need new fan motor and other extensive parts & repairs.
There will be metal repairs to be done.
Brakes are unknown.
Would recommend replacing all air bags and possibly lines.
Figure on a new inverter/charger.
Plenty of rust to clean up.
Quite a bit of unknowns. Much restoration needed.

I hope this will help anyone interested.

Great information! Sounds to me that one could pick up Forest's 93 at $49,900 and be dollars ahead of this one for $20,000.

Neweller
03-23-2013, 09:33 PM
Jon, you got that right. I would say there is easily $20k in repairs if you did most of the work yourself. And that would not be covering the main running gear if there is any problems there. And for most people it would not include the repainting. If I bought it for around $10-12k I could make it work, but I have a feeling someone is going to take it over $20k and have a couple of years get retirement ready project. Something buyers need to consider is that by time they get a rougher coach like this ready for extended use, it will have lost even more to depreciation. Cdats was a much cleaner repo than this one and I believe he has easily sunk another $10k into his, mostly the cost of tires and batteries. I'd just as soon buy one with a bad engine that is much cleaner inside and out, because I know that I would just have the engine replacement and not a bunch of doo-dads all over the place to worry about. That coach has been just downright neglected. A guy paying to have most of it done could probably buy a '96 and newer coach in prime shape for less than he would have in this unit.

I have a feeling this coach could head over $30k. There are a lot of people in that ballpark with money. When you start getting up over 50-60k the cash buyers start dwindling it seems. It's not like you can just go down to any bank now days and get an equity loan. But a lot of older people still have a few bucks in savings for something like this or can get out the plastic. And it's still better than starting out from scratch with a wore out bus to convert.

John, I think if you threw your 91 on Ebay you could get your money back plus some.

Whoever buys it must not mind the fact that it will need money and work put into it. But if done right it is a Newell after all so it will be a great coach for someone .

Neweller
03-24-2013, 06:59 PM
Guys all it can be is someone feeling they can save a few bucks, get into a large Newell and feel they will put in their own free sweat equity. If you are really handy and either want a big project or are used to working really hard for your money, you could feel like it's a deal at around $30k. Or if you are looking for something to just park and not drive, then that could be a nice cabin of sorts too. There would be less to worry about in that sense. I have done that before. A Newell parked on a permanent vacation lot somewhere would be better than a POS box trailer or fiver. I thought about putting an older Newell on my property by the pond and use it either for guests or if I decided to rent my house out and hit the trail I could use it to stay in when I was returning to the area.

Neweller
03-24-2013, 08:48 PM
Well, I will put money on it now, that it is heading over $30k. There is definitely some interest in her. At least three individuals are wanting her and who knows who might pop in at the end for a snipe. YEE HA! Welcome to the family. Hopefully it will be someone that can share some good insight. I believe there is one person bidding on it that wants to export it out of the country.

Neweller
03-24-2013, 09:42 PM
The suck part on this coach is that the bidders are within 12hrs of the coach ending and can't retract their bids. I think there might be something funny about the bidding on this deal the more I look at it. I see the same sales tactics being used that some other sellers use to sell cars and coaches. The tactic obviously works, since I fell for it once, but once only. Anyone else know what I'm talking about? Do want to let the cat out of the hat? Or do you want me to?

folivier
03-24-2013, 10:00 PM
I was thinking the same thing Ken. I've seen this happen before where a schill bidder working for the seller tries to run the price up and actually wins the bid. Then the coach mysteriously appears a few weeks later.

Really? That is disappointing. I had no idea this kind of fraudulent thing was going on. If anyone on this forum is bidding on this coach beware!

Neweller
03-24-2013, 10:10 PM
Exactly Forest! Here's a tactic that they appear to be using that Mr. Olivers down in Texas used on me when buying my first Newell over ten years ago. First off when you talk to them by phone especially on a second or third call with them, they will open you up and ask the magic question of what do you think it's going to bring or really worth? Red Flag for a Shill. Second, these type of sellers will always advertise how they sell so cheap and only care to make a little profit and sell volumes so others can get great deals. Red Flag. Third, We just sell them as/is and let them go to the highest bidder without a reserve so that you can get a deal, we just don't care. But of course you have to remember the (POS) is AS/IS! Red Flag again. Anything I have missed?

Do we need more proof, because I have it?

And Forest, they can always say the high bidder backed out. And if they feel like ebay might be getting wind of there shilling, then they either chill for a while, come up with another bidder name. Which most that are a little smarter will season multiple names and good build good feedback using different IP addresses if their smarter. Some have alternate seller names as well.

MrE
03-24-2013, 10:16 PM
I feel like I'm getting smarter just by reading this forum.

1. Mr. Olivers and Karolina Koaches....bad.
2. Motorhomes of Texas...................good.

Thanks for the heads up everyone.

Ken,

I think your right and after further checking I noticed that this same bidder (U***I)(354)has been bidding on multiple units from 24K to 87K dollar motor homes. That is by far a broad price range and the bidder is always one of the final people to bid on their coaches. Could they be bidding on their own stuff? Very good chance but I will let everyone else be the judge.

I think it is great everyone looks out for each other on this forum. A tight niche community looking out for one another. It should be like that more often in the world. Great investigation Sean. Sellers should not get away with selling high dollar coaches like that when they are bidding on the coach themselves to raise the price! Someone should turn them into ebay!

Ebay's Shill bidding policy (http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/seller-shill-bidding.html)

Shill bidding happens when anyone—including family, friends, roommates, employees, or online connections—bids on an item with the intent to artificially increase its price or desirability.

Shill bidding is also illegal in many places and can carry severe penalties.

Well Jon, they have been outbid by another buyer and may back off after receiving this message. This high bidder may end up with it for a couple of grand less then they are wanting to take em. Figuring they lowered the price on their website from 50k to 40k tells me they need to get it in the low to mid 30's. My hunch is that they bought it for around $12k at a Manheim Auction out of Florida. There was one that sold down there for that. I don't think they needed to shill on this one, there are a couple of people interested in it still.

Funny, I was going to post a comment on Mr Oliver's after reading Forest's experience with MOT. In Jan 2008 I saw the listing on Ebay by Mr Oliver's for my Newell. It was listed @ $70K, with "make an offer". I offered $60K & Paul came back @ $65. I accepted. I called Monday, the next day, & explained it was a holiday, so I couldn't wire a deposit. He responded that I sounded honest & if I could pick it up by Friday, no deposit was required.

I arrived Friday & took the coach for a test ride. All was as expected & we closed the deal. It was sold as is, but they stated everything worked. They were prepared to take as much time as necessary to go over all the features, but I told them I had owned motorhomes for 30 years & it would not be necessay.

About 2-3 weeks later, after I had moved into the coach, I found that the front furnace would not light, & the frig freezed everything.
I called them, & they sent a new control board for the furnace & some part that went inside the frig that fixed the problem.

They didn't have to send any parts, but they did @ NC.

Anyway my 2 cents

Like Charita said, It is really great of you guys to bring this shinanigans to light if it so. I have a friend that bought a coach from them last year and wondered if this had happened to him. I told him that how can any seller really let all his selling motorhomes go without a reserve or a way to protect himself. Of course to schill! This is illegal in all 50 states and punishable by law.

I

too liked dealing with Paul Davis and thought he and his wife were really nice people. His employee took us fishing. We stayed down at the lot for three days trying

to get acquainted with the coach. I was so ecstatic about the coach and in awe that I screwed myself. Let me go back to my conversation with Paul on the

telephone 3 days prior to the auction ending; I had spoke with him on at least three different occasions, on the last time we spoke before the auction ended, I was

the high bidder at $13,100 thinking was going to get a steal of a deal on this coach, Paul asks me what do I think it will bring? I told him; I don't know, I was

thinking $18k would be OK, but it could bring $22k or something but that I really hope I end up with it. He then said that he didn't care if it ended where it was at

and hoped I ended up with it. He made his money. The auction ended with me being the high bidder for $27,600.00. I called him right away and the told me I

needed to get him a $2000.00 deposit within 48 hours because he has another back up buyer for it. Of course the next morning I overnighted him a deposit. I then

called him on the phone and gave him the tracking number and asked if I could pick the coach up by the weekend, he replied; if you can wait a little longer, we like

to go through everything on these coaches, change the fluids etc...., for our customers. I thought ok, I can wait. I got stalled for over 2 weeks. When I arrived

down at his place I was presently greeted and felt very comfortable. After being at the lot for a couple of days and going over the coach, the water pump quit and

I told him, he gave me a new one. I told him the DVD player didn't work, he offered me a new one. His wife was so nice, that she took my wife shopping for bedding

to make our trip more pleasurable. We really enjoyed the purchase at Mr. Oliver’s. Now, we decided it was time to roll-on back to California with our new to us

prized Newell. On the way home, the throttle spring caught and I didn't realize it til I was rolling into the rest area. I decided to get back on the freeway and call

Paul and tell him I was having problems. I didn't want to stop at the rest area with the thing at almost wide open throttle. I got Paul on the phone told him what

was going on, he said when you pull over, have something handy and block the air intake so she will starve for air, and that the return spring must have gotten

stuck again l like had happened to them, but thought they had fixed it. We pulled into the next rest area down I-40 and did exactly as he said and it died right

away. The spring was the problem; I bent it so that it would work and eventually replaced later on. As it was getting later, the winter temps were getting cold and

the coach heat was not working, I was freezing, and I called Paul again to let him know. Paul said; Ken, just run the generator and use the electric heaters, so I

did. A little ways down the highway I was approaching Flagstaff and it was much colder, the damn generator stopped working, which made the trip a little miserable

the rest of the way. Anyways, I made it to California and parked the Newell. A few days later I was looking behind the couch and noticed a soft spot below the

window, turned out to be a large rotten area. I called Paul to let him know about it. Paul stated; Ken it's just and old coach and you are going to find things like

that on it, just use it the way it is and enjoy it! Ok, thanks. I ended up replacing a whole sheet of marine grade 5/8" plywood and moved on. A couple of months

later, I preparing for a trip and removed all the Plexiglas panels in the main basement storage along with some old Formica covered panels left behind from a previous

remodel, to find a nasty rotten covered up floor. As I went around the coach at that time, I found many areas and cubby holes with fresh white caulking sprayed

over with fresh black paint and this list of cover ups goes on and on. I won't bore you with anymore details. This is the truth and nothing but the truth. I first

Newell was a great big screwing. It is what it is. Paul Davis seems like a great guy and maybe he is. I did find out later they had bought the coach from Newell

wholesale for right at $10k, so there was enough profit to take care of us on the little things, and yes that is business. Nothing says that shill bidding is not common

place among a ton of dealers. I know it to be common practice in the industry, as I have a handful of family members whom own dealerships on the West Coast and

know there greedy practices. They have great reputations as well. I also had a family member who works for eBay share some interesting info with me, and I'll leave

that as/is as well. End of my wonderful story. Just "Buyer Beware" Some dealers are great and you may get a crap deal, while other dealers stink and you may get a

great deal and vise versus. My friends; It's a number and chances game.

I notice that my question didn't get posted to the listing, but here is the response that I received:

No shill bidding.
No worries.
We got too many rvs on auction to worry about that.
I can offer to show the winning bidder the bidders list if that would make you feel any better. ???
Also.
I spoke with several ebayers last week that stated they were willing to pay in the $30's for this RV. We have had a HUGE amount of interest in this RV.
So. I suspect the bidding to go even higher.
We do seem to have ebayers that will bid on one RV and then change their mind when the price goes up on one then they switch to another.
So. I try to list similar cheaper ones to end prior to more expensive. This seems to help out bidding for me.
ebayers start bidding on one when the bidding is still low. And then switch to another if they think another is lower in bidding value than actual value.
Last week we had a super c diesel that was at $30k with a few hours to go and it ended at $41700.
The winning bidder told us that he put a proxy bid in of $50k and he won it $41700. So he was super happy.

Doesn't make sense that many people would be interested in it in the 30's and up range when they where asking 39K on their website. Why sell it on ebay and pay the fee's then? Sorry not buying their response.

Exactly, so these buyers would want to buy a Newell coach, then jump to a Fleetwood or a Monaco? Not in the same price range or league here. I don't believe them. If they are shilling of course they'd lie about it too.:thumbdn:

If they are shill bidding I hope they get stuck with it. Let's see if they relist it in a couple of weeks like Forest said. It's plain wrong seeing used RV dealers on ebay trying to pull a fast ones, screwing people over and getting away with it. I hope ebay investigates this seller they will see on their end what you guys haven't already found. For looking out guys and Boo! to untrustworthy sellers!:cursing:

I would have to believe that is true. The crazy thing is that the credit union had an ebay account but for some reason didn't want to put that coach on there. It would have surely brought close to 40k or more. In fact when I talked to them back in December I was thinking of buying it and just doing that. But of course I wanted it for another $10k less. lol. And they would have took close to that to get it off the books before year end. They told us that there were only two people interested and both of them were me and a family member. A new year turns a new tide and hey John and Patti still ended up with a dream of a deal, much cleaner than this one going off right now. By the way Clint how's your baby coming along, is it done down at Newell? Waiting to see those glorious pictures of the factory finishing touches.

Yeah, it looks to be that way. I could spank it and get it up a couple bucks more to my guess and save or would I. NOT! The high bidder appears to be real and he will save a couple grand from what they were asking unless they back out and don't buy it.

Hopefully the new owner finds this website. Based on JetHot's post they're going to need our help.

I agree 100%. Your coach would have been a steal of a deal considering the kind of money which needs to be invested in that 1991 that sold tonight on ebay. Jimmy will you be relisting your coach on ebay?

I may be soon. We kinda took a break for a while. It's in the shop now being serviced and having everything checked from front to rear. I will be pulling my trailer to Indy for the Mecum auction. I have a rotisserie restored 1969 Judge that I have listed with them for their auction. Ill pull it up with the Newell and stay in it all week.

I still have a hard time believing those bids. Mine only brought in the 30s on two different occasions. Mine is really a nice coach. If it just had ONE slide I would be happy.

Jimmy, I am surprised no one has stepped up to the plate for your coach, sounds like a well cared for turn key Newell!!
69 Judge? ram air III or IV?

Ken,
WOW, quite an experience you had, to say the least. I will be the first to admit that I had some other problems with my Newell, but I felt if I had spent a day at Mr Olivers, they would have probably been fixed, My BAD.
My first motorhome was a new 1978 Titan. As with any large purchase I was way too excited. After I drove it home I made a list of the defects. It went back to the dealership for 2 months for them to attempt the correct the mfg issues. I eventually purchased a welder just to keep up cracks. On the upside, I sold it after 5 years for what I paid for it.
I toured the Newell factory in 1980, but thats another story.
Many years & motorhomes later, in 2003ish, I purchased a 1989 Eagle bus, on Ebay. The bus was in East Tenn, just off 40, about 750 miles from Tulsa. My son was visiting fm CA with his 2 years old son, so this would be his forst road trip.
To make a long story short, I'm heading west on 40, about 10 miles into the trip. I see my son pulling up next to me with his wipers on & my white Pontiac mostly BLACK. I pulled over at my first chance & discovered that a hyd hose going to the rad fan had ruptured. Shortly thereafter a Tenn Highway Patrol pulls up & ask what happened. I gave him by tale & asked if he had any suggestions. He said he could not recommend any specific garages, but he did had me a 6" thick yellow pages with "Peggy Sue's Towing & Used Tires shop" plainly marked. Not feeling I had any choice, I called them. They arrived with the proper wrecker & actually knew what they were doing.
After hooking up to my bus, I followed them west on 40 to the next exit. They got off & proceeded south through the woods on the twisty & turny road. It reminded me of "Deliverence"
3 months later & $1K they had my bus serviced & all ready to travel. I later went back with my brother, & drove it all the way back to Tulsa in the snow, no heater, in one day. It was amazing that the right wiper perfectly cleaned the snow off the windshied onto the mirror.
The turn indicators were on the floor. There were 3 switches like a high beam switch, in a triangle with the high beam switch being at the top. My brother who was following me , keept calling on the walki talki, asking why I was signalling right & going left.
More to follow..................

What a sweet machine! Looks like a pretty nice crib in the background. It's kind of crazy how this thread has spun out.lol! Is this MrE's prize for getting the closes on the '91 Newell? What do you think Jon? Kind of matches the graphics on your Newell.

The many long years rotisserie frame off restoration set me back around 70k. I started in 06 when they were bringing crazy money....I finished in 2012 when they were not. My Hope is it brings 60-70k. It has zero miles since being finished. Went straight from restoration shop to my shop and has been under a cover since. I had too much money in it to drive it. I have other GTOs I enjoy but not this one. I hope this one helps me afford a newer Newell.

Jimmy, not to long ago I ran across someone with a later Newell actually willing to take a muscle car in trade. From what I remember, their asking price was not that bad and if I can pin down which one I will throw the info your way.
