Recently while Passing through Cleveland, Just saw a bunch of new trucks leaving the freightliner plant. Most all of them had single tires on the rear.Sure did look funny but must be a reason for this.

There are several advantages and disadvantage to replacing dual wheel/tires with the super wide singles.

Advantages include: decreased weight and rolling resistance, slightly less noise, increased fuel economy, reduced initial cost to a buy 2 super wide single wheels and tires compared to 4 dually wheels. The increase in fuel economy on a large tractor trailer is in the range of 2-5 percent. The cost of a super wide single tire is about the same as a pair of standard tires while a super wide wheel is about $130 less than a pair of standard wheels.

Disadvantages: TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING is much more critical (a tire failure is likely to be much more exciting/destructive, especially on a motorhome that isn't running tandem axles), reduced tire availability - it is harder to find a replacement tire on the road, the first generation super wide tires increased road rutting and cracking so the government wasn't too happy, and lastly, it is not cost effective to change over to the super wide singles if you already have dual wheels that are serviceable.
