One thing I have found with my IR gun is that you have to hold it about 6" to 8" away from the target to get an accurate reading.

If you shoot an air conditioner register for example from 5' away you may get a reading of 65*. If you hold the IR gun 6" away you may get a reading of 55*. I found this out by reading the directions. You know what they say, "when all fails - read the directions"!
