I had to have ours rebuilt last year. I would start by getting some Voltage Readings with a Volt Meter at the Battery. Make sure that the Merge Switch is Off and go to an Engine Battery. You should see something like 12.3 Volts or so Idle and around 14 Volts with the Engine Running. (be sure to give it a short rev to be sure that it should be charging)
Is your Alternator Belt Driven or Gear Driven? Our '82 is the Gear Driven type and that is Military or Marine and not real common.
If you have a Gear Driven then you should be very careful who you take it to! The Repair Shop down the street may not be the best choice since parts are specific.
