Hey Richard:
On my roof,at the center it's three inches from the aluminum to the bottom of the plywood. The ribs going across are flat on bottom for the ceiling and on top, taper off from a max at the center (2 3/4" thick) going towards each side. Not a whole lot of room to recess.
Thanks for reminding me to seal the basement air compressor lines, I haven't started to remove them yet.
