I've had success over the years having (automotive) alternators and starters rebuilt. There is a local guy called Bean (no idea if he has a last name) that does a good job. Neat kinda place, filthy, cash only, thick haze of cigarette smoke, gotta speak redneck or cajun, but does a great job.
