Hey Brad:
I did the same thing and asked the same question. I was told that the risk is that you will blow the excess oil out all over the engine and make quite a mess. My wife and I got one of those pumps that you can insert into the dipstick tube and we pumped out a gallon. I hated doing that, but in the end, no oil mess. Hopefully some experts will chime in here.
