On mine it really has not dented it but has gouged the paint several times. I had some paint mixed that matches my door and touch it up at least once a year.
For me its worth the nonsense of a few nicks to have use of the awning and I have not took the time to figure out how to protect it which would be a better way to go.
We rarley hit it when using the door under normal conditions but your right, when a wind gets ahold of it is when you have a problem with it hitting.
