IFS allows a shorter turning radius. I personally don't find much difference in the ride.
My 1993 had the solid front axle and its turning radius was about 44'. Presently, I have a 99 Newell and the turning radius is about 42' - that is another slight advantage between the 97 and the 96. Some 96s might have had IFS, but for the most part 97 was the year for IFS.

1997 was the first year for slide outs, which is another big difference.
