The free traffic feature is included with each of the "T" Garmins. It is picked-up on the FM band by the large shape on the power cord. If you are in an area offering the traffic service, you will see notices on the screen.

Frequent map updates are available from Garmin, if you buy the lifetime updates. That way, new roads are added to your base maps.

There are routing choices you make on the unit, or in the Mapsource software, which should be reviewed. If you select "shortest route" for instance, you could end up on gravel roads.

I was a relative late adopter of GPS (1999), but have come to appreciate the benefits of knowing where I am at all times.
