Any consideration in updating the main control unit on a 80's Kohler Generator set
Not sure what years they ran the 12.5 Kohler before going to the even larger genset's? I would not nead anymore than that. My real question is has anyone ever taken an older version generator and replaced the original control center with a more modern one? I just see problems with wiring etc. on the older units. Other than maybe that most generators seem real similar.

Really...We have the original 12.5 KW Kohler. Like the rest of the equipment that Newell used at the time it was high end. With the quality build, installation and proper maintenance there should be no issues. Maintenance is the key though so when looking you should pay attention to tell tail signs of poor maintenance.
We dry-camp allot and have no issues with ours. Now I change the oil and fuel filters regularly. The radiator started looking questionable so I had it re-cored. Again Maintenance, but I have seen gens only a few years old that are in poor condition.
I might even go so far as to say an older unit may even be more robust. In those days there was no a move to reduce copper.

Do you know through what years they would predominately be the same? Maybe I was listening to the wrong guy? I know the engine and generator themselves are pretty bullet proof if maintained. Just the unit with all the capacitors and stuff was a slight concern.

Sorry I am not an expert on gens, I just read the manuals and do my own maintenance.
