'ETHANOL'
~ 'T. Boone Pickens EXPLAINS'
»»»»»» 'The POLITICAL MATH of ETHANOL' ~
»»»»»» 'NewellClassic.com' «««««~»»»»» 'NewellClassic.com' ««««««
«~» This past weekend, in an interview with the 'Wall Street Journal,' oil tycoon
(T.) Boone Pickens predicted that the price of oil would average $70 a barrel
this year with only occasional dips.

«~» Why? Eighty-five million barrels a day are about as much as the world
can produce
at this point, his research says, with oil-sand deposits in Canada
providing a hopeful buffer. The world’s demand for oil is about 85 million barrels
a day
. Pickens sees this tight demand as impetus for alternative energy sources.

«~» He would put his money on ethanol: ''Bob Dole' once told me that there are
42 senators from farm states and that pretty much means the government is
going to be in ethanol
.'

We 'all remember the story of Jed Clampett from 'The Beverly Hillbillies' along
with his 'Bubbling Crude,' Oil that is, Black Gold, Texas Tea.
Now, I wonder what will be the next new slang name given (if not already) to
'Ethanol ?' . . . White Gold – Yellow Gold ? . . or . . .

'BIODIESEL'
~ 'UK Report Shows Biodiesel Reduces'
»»»»»»»»» 'NewellClassic.com' 'Carbon Emissions by 94%' ~
»»»»»»»»» 'NewellClassic.com' ««««««««~»»»»»»»» 'NewellClassic.com' «««««««««
«~» A new study commissioned by the independent research consortium, NorthEast
Biofuels concludes that replacing ultra-low sulfur diesel with biodiesel reduces
emissions by 94 percent.

«~» The study followed the entire cycle of UK-sourced biodiesel from oilseed through
production, right up to the pump.

ALGAE AS JET FUEL ?
ON THE CUTTING EDGE
~ 'Researchers Evaluate Algae'
»»»»»»»»» 'NewellClassic.com' 'It Could Be Converted Into Jet Fuel' ~
»»»»»»»»» 'NewellClassic.com' «««««««««~»»»»»»»»» 'NewellClassic.com' «««««««««
«~» A team from Arizona State University, backed by a $6.7-million award from the U.S. government,
is looking into the feasibility of producing JP-8 military jet fuel from biological sources specifically,
algae
.

«~» Lead by researchers Qiang Hu and Milton Sommerfield, who together direct ASU’s Laboratory for
Algae Research and Biotechnology
, the team is evaluating the more than 40,000 known strains of the
single-cell organism for their oil-production potential.

«~» Hu and Sommerfield note that, on a per-acre basis, the annual oil yield of algae can be some
100 times that of soybeans
. Moreover, unlike corn and soybeans, algae is neither food nor feed, so
there’s no conflict of interest in its use as biofuel, and algae is readily grown in salt or brackish water,
eliminating the need for traditional fresh-water irrigation.

«~» The team, which has been working to develop a cost-efficient means of producing algae based
bio-diesel for automotive uses
, expects to have a plan to produce a bio-derived emulation of JP-8
(the military version of civilian-grade Jet A-1 turbine engine fuel) by the end of 2008.

«~~~» Producing Six Times More Algae Than Any Other Algae Growing System
»»»»»»»»»»» 'NewellClassic.com' «««««««««~»»»»»»»»» 'NewellClassic.com' «««««««««««
«~» AlgaeLink, a subsidiary of the Dutch firm Bioking, will unveil its photo-bioreactors for algae-for-biodiesel
production at the UK Biodiesel-Expo and Biofuels Conference, giving the UK its first demonstration of a second-
generation biofuel that the conference organizer says “is already getting the bosses at Boeing excited”.

«~» Event organizer Biofuels Media says commercial algae farming is coming to the rescue of the increa-
singly controversial biodiesel
.

«~» Unlike crops such as soy, palm, corn and rapeseed, many strains of micro-algae contain as much as
70% oil
- up to 25 times more than oil seed rape.

«~» With increasing interest in biodiesel as an alternative to fossil fuel, many have looked at the possibility
of growing more oilseed crops as a solution to the problem of peak oil, but have 'Raised Concerns' over the
'Displacement of Food Crops,' 'Impact on Biodiversity,' and 'Rising Feedstock Prices.'

the Atmosphere.'

Food Crops Such as Soybeans.'
