Matt,
One more question. When the air started leaking out, was it leaking out the bottom of the air dryer? If not where?

I'm glad to hear Tommy Key & Newell are taking care of the issue. They have always been good to me!!!!!

Default Now down the road.

Now I am down the road about 75 miles from Amarillo. My Newell performing just as it has always..... No issues. Air holding, pressures up, temps down. My Newell is performing just as it has and should. NO ISSUES!

Maybe I can answer a couple of questions posted.
The lowest I saw the pressure was 40-50psi and still driving. The light was always on... no beeping or alarms... Darren (newells tech) came out to escort me back to the shop, about 20 or so miles.. I only used the brake once other than in the parking lot. I did coast thru a couple of stop signs and red lights... but Darren was kinda holding traffic for me. There was a concern about the brakes trying to set with the lower pressure. My left drive wheel did get hotter than others but I don't think any harm was done.

Yes my 12volt air pump would have supplied air for toilet and pocket doors IF THE SWITCH IS ON! DAH! However buy that time I was burnt on checking things....

Steve, the air was blowing from the bottom of the dryer. Not sure but maybe the spot that it purges from.

So for now,

Sometimes I sits and thinks, and sometimes I just SITS.
me, Connie and a little guy Jack.

Matt,
Somehow the dryer check valve failed when the filter was changed. VERY CURIOUS! Parts do fail, but the timing was amazing. Have good travels & maybe we can meet up later in the year. Try putting in your wife's CD. We find her music very soothing.

I'm surely not a lot of inspiration.

Matt,

I would like to change my air filter and check valve, but I don't know where to start.

Did you have a chance to watch them change the filter? Is it a simple task?

Do you have a part # for the filter on your Newell invoice?

I called Tommy Key @ Newell. The air filter is a spin on filter located in the driver's side tag wheel well. It is a spin on filter (Baldwin BA 5374) around $40. I have been changing this air dryer filter every 6 months as routine maintenance.

I was used to seeing the old style air dryer. It was silver and about 5 inches in diameter and 18 inches tall and it had fins. It was located in the driver's side of the engine compartment. The pop off valve was immediately below it.

I asked him about changing the check valve. He said that it can not be changed - if it fails the entire air dryer unit must be changed.

Tuga,
Thanks for getting the answer to my question. I was wondering whether the check valve within the air dryer was replaceable. Apparently it is not. I have been changing my own air dryer filters too. I change mine every year. Unless I was finding water within my air tanks you might be able to save a few bucks as Newell advises changing annually. In thinking about what could have gone wrong in Matt's case the only thing I can figure is some debris fell into the air dryer body, the filter was replaced and the debris clogged the check valve open. Only other explanation is a very curious coincident. I will be very careful that no outside debris falls into the air dryer when I change the filter.

Hey Steve good to hear from you.

When you change your spin on air filter, what is that gookie looking stuff inside the filter?

It looks like a little like vaseline.

Tuga,
It if a mixture of water & a small amount of oil. A small amount of oil is pumped out of the air compressor, mixes with the moisture that is captured by the air dryer & makes up a gray goop. When I change the filter I carefully wipe out as much as I can with my finger. When I replace the filter I lightly oil the rubber gasket. Hand tight only!

Always good to hear from my Newell friends............................
