Default What are the standard horsepower ratings of Newell Coach diesel engines??

I have been looking at used Newell Coaches quite a bit lately and have a question regarding their horse power. I saw a 1987 Newell advertised with an 8V92 stating 525 hp. I have also seen a 1989 Newell with an 8V92 stating it had 475 hp. I thought these engines went from 450 to 500 hp? Or was there a special order or something?

Thanks,

Chip,

Every Detroit Diesel 8V92 carries specification stickers on the valve covers. The horsepower of the particular engine will be indicated on one of these valve cover stickers. As I recall, the early 8V92s were installed (starting in 1984) and were rated at 475 hp, and the power rating for the later 8V92 engines used should be 500 hp.
If somebody has done modifications or turned up the injection pump, they could easily bump the HP more.

This subject came up some years ago when I purchased my Newell. One of my valve covers labels says 450HP & the other says 500HP. Turns out there was a change in the type of fuel used in Gov't test back in the early 90's and most engines were downgraded from their original published HP. Regardless what I have, it is enough to go a fast as the tires allow.
Marine applications have a potential of substancially more power, but they also have a larger cooling ability, the bane of a detriot.
