Default Which 8v92 does the 87 Newell have in it?

Hi, I know the 89 has the DDEC 2 in it, but I am looking at an 87 and the owner doesnt know which 8V92 it has in it. Do any of you know if the 87 has the DDEC 1 or DDEC 2 or is it the mechanical control version? Thanks!

It is my understanding that Detroit Diesel built engines with DDEC I from 1986-1989, DDEC II from 1988-1992 and DDEC III from 1992-1994.

A 1987 Newell, would most likely have DDEC I but it would depend on the date of engine manufacture. If the stickers are still on the valve covers, they should give the date of engine manufacture and identify if it is DDEC but will not identify which DDEC version. My 1992 Newell engine says "8V92 TA DDEC" "Manufactured July, 1990". According to Detroit Diesel mine is a DDEC II.

Detroit Diesel officially launched the 8V92 DDEC in 1988. From what Detroit Diesel has said, some manufactures of buses had early proto-types released which Newell may have one or two show coaches possibly floating out there. But, that would be something for Newell to verify on the accuracy.

The expense goes up with the DDEC engines. Supposedly there is a slight fuel mileage increase and of course horsepower gain. Does it wash out, I don't know. I have a 6v92 Silver Series with Turbo putting out 375 hp on a 33k pound coach that will fly down the road. Can't see any advantage to the 8v unless you absolutely need the extra hp and torque like a heavier Newell with tag axle.

Just my nickles worth of info.

Isn't the DDEC mean it's electronic? If so and according to JohnC's statement the engine is "manual" which means it is not a DDEC? Correct? Just throwing this into the equation to better understand what we are trying to say here. If that helps or makes any sense?

Now, does this mean that Newell's of this age came only manual or with the option of a DDEC? I just want to make sure I'm understanding correctly.

Newell started using electronic fuel management (DDEC) in 1988-

There are advantages to both mechanical and electronic fuel control
