900 1/22/2003 12:21:05 PM 1/22/2003 TechTalk Staff TechTalk@newellcoach.com Fuel Tank Leak, While we understand your preference to fix the fuel tank in place, we know of no safe procedure to accomplish this. Our recommendation is to remove the tank, thoroughly steam clean it to remove any diesel residue, then weld the tank, and finally reinstall it. This is a potentially dangerous job and should be done only by a competant technician who is experienced at repairing fuel tanks. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DO THIS AT HOME!

901 1/22/2003 8:56:08 PM 1/23/2003 J Clark jvclark02@cs.com Fuel Tank Leak, Hi Joe-
This is one of those- 'been there, done that' things for me. For me the hardest part was emptying and refilling the tank (three times)and you have already done that.

I agree with Newells tech staff. Pull the tank and take it to a good welding shop. They can weld it in a matter of minutes (diesel tanks are easy to weld).

It is fairly easy to remove and two people can manhandle it. Be sure to flush it out after welding to get the 'burnt' residue out.

I tried the 'in frame' repair once and within a matter of months, I was seeping diesel again. You might consider having the welder reinforce (weld) the mounting plates as they seem to be a common failure point on fuel tanks.

Good luck! jc

905 1/31/2003 9:28:41 PM 1/31/2003 Keith Walker keith@highdefinitions.com plasma tv in high altitude I sell & install plasma TV's in 6000 to 8500' altitudes. 1st & 2nd generation plasmas have a distinctive Buzz (sounds like a neon light) due to the gas between the glass panels being pressurized. 50% of current sets have no buzz due to plasma technology improvement. Current Pioneer Elite,Runco & NEC Plasma's are rated to 12,000'. The larger the panel , the bigger the buzz. I installed a retractable Sony 32" HDTV plasma in my coach and the buzz is faint. The plasma is coupled with a Tracstar HDTV In-Motion Satelitte, Sony HDTV Satellite Reciever through a VGA connnection and the 1080I Resolution is breathtaking. Large LCD (37") Panels do not have the buzz phenom.

BUT be prepared to spend some money. Probably at least $25K

Good luck

909 2/7/2003 9:45:36 PM 2/7/2003 J Clark jvclark02@cs.com Tachometer malfunction I apologize for the slow response, but I was attending the Newell rally in Palm Springs. The food and entertainment was fantastic, and Karl and Alice (owners of Newell Coach) were very gracious. Now, to your question, I lost the tach on my '79 Newell (Cummins) twice. The first time was a loose connection and the second time was the sending unit. The most common source of tach failure in descending order are; loose/corroded connection, broken wires, failed sending unit, bad gauge and broken drive shaft. I am not a devotee of remove and replace, nor do I enjoy yoga-under-the-dash or low crawling in the mud. In your front and rear terminal compartments are ?tach? wires (position #16, #6 & #7 on mine). I would first clean and check the connections. Next, place your trusty voltmeter in the ohms position, and put the red lead on one rear terminal (#6 or #7 ?) and ground the other lead. Record the ohms and volt readings on both terminals. Start the engine, you should see a significant increase in resistance (Ohms) and a small increase in volts (10ths) on one of the terminals. If not, stick a brew in the freezer, put on the coveralls and knee-pads, and start tracking the wires down to locate the engine sending unit. There are several places it can be on an 8V92 (blower, camshaft, or alternator driven) and I have yet to check what output Newell Coach is using. Clean and re-attach the connection at the sending unit and try the tach one more time. If a no go, you might free the moths from your billfold (in my case anyway) and order a new sending unit, or remove, inspect and repair everything as needed. Good luck!- jc

916 2/20/2003 11:32:19 PM 2/24/2003 J Clark jvclark02@cs.com Storage underneath compared to a Liberty Coach That's a tough question. Newell Coach has never built two coaches exactly the same, so I was curious as to how they could answer your question. Every coach is custom built from the ground up for the buyer, so storage space will vary based on length, options, and number of axles. The best I can do is give you the open storage space I have on my 40' 102 with a tag axle and roof airs: one-42Wx30Hx100D; one-23Wx30Hx100D; two-22Wx30Hx28D, one-30Wx30Hx28D. jc

919 2/25/2003 5:19:16 PM 2/27/2003 Bill Burch bmburch@swbell.net serious chit chat I tow a 22' trailer behind my 45' coach which puts me at the legal limit, 70', for most states. I have a friend towing a 30 footer and to date, he has not had any problem with being overlength. I would be afraid be over length and become involved in an accident. The legal length limits are published in the front sections of most road atlases.

921 2/27/2003 1:20:39 PM 2/27/2003 Marc Hobbie lbrendel01@yahoo.com Interested in Purchasing Newell 1982 38' with 6V92 turbo. Coach has 150k miles, Allision 5 speed auto. Bus exterior has been stripped and is ready for paint. Does anyone have any idea what this coach is worth? I am looking at purchasing it from an on-line seller. Given the above information, is there anything undesireable about this coach? Does anyone have anything similar that they are selling? Let me know! Thanks! I am interested in becoming a Newell owner.

Q
922 2/27/2003 7:56:53 PM 3/4/2003 Scott P. slpeatross@aol.com Interested in Purchasing Newell I would put the value on an '82 in excellent condition in the low $50K range. It does have the 6V92 & 5 speed which is a desireable drivetrain. I don't know if the 8V92 was offered in '82, but that would be even more desireable, but the 6V is much better than some of the obsolete Cummins engines also offered in that era. If in less than excellent condition, use caution because refurbishment gets expensive quickly. Factory quality paint can cost $10,000-$25,000. Excellent condition also means updated interior. Neutral colors using quality fabrics or leather is important, also expensive. If in original, yet dated condition, you may pick it up much cheaper. Bottom line is don't spend all your money to aquire the coach. Keep plenty in reserve for the many things you may discover it needs after you buy it. Good luck!
