That will tell you what number the coach is. You will have to talk to someone in the sales dept. at Newell to actually find out the year model of the coach. A 97 would be in the 460-480 range, but that is just an @ guess. i had a 99 and it was 536 and they make about 38-40 per year. I now have an 03 that is #655. The 06s today are like 770s.

It appears that the most active projects involve perhaps 50 to 100 horsepower. Our expectation for something that is actually practical for a Newell would be a fuel cell powered generator system. The required power is in the range where development work may be seeing some progress, and an absolutely silent fuel cell powered generator system would be a very attractive feature for a Newell as well as for bus conversions. The market may well be willing to pay, say, $20,000 extra for a silent, vibration-free generator This is still pretty wild stuff, though, and highly unpredictible, so we'd suggest you don't hold your breath in the near or intermediate term.

Paid $112,500 which seemed like the low end of the market at the time. My impression is that the market for these big coaches without slideouts is soft. With the general concerns regarding fuel prices I think that the market will continue to be a buyer's market. I would think in the $140K range - give or take 10% for condition. I am really glad that we bought a Newell. I continue to be impressed by the solid design and reliability of this coach. Good Luck!

This is one of those areas where, yes, it could be done, but most certainly the cost would be prohibitive. Without even checking pricing for all of the required ZF parts (they are expensive), the chassis structure and attachment points, both front and rear, are significantly different for the ZF suspension. Note that the "wheelbase" between the drive and tag axles is longer with the ZF setup. That means the drive axle would be moved forward, requiring the center section of the chassis and the body to be modified. This would be a huge job.

We don't mind doing retrofits if the value is there. For example, we have modified several of the Series 2000 coaches with the original rectangular headlights to the newer design front end with the round Hella Xenon gas discharge projector headlights, at a total cost of about $10,000. But sometimes a retrofit is just way outside of any justifiable cost, and we believe that retrofitting the ZF suspension sits in that category.

I notice that you have only done one so far. Do you plan for CAT's to be a regular option in the future, or was this a custom job?

My experience with CAT power in my yachts has been exceptionally good and although I have a Series 60 in my Prevost/Marathon presently, I am considering CAT for my new coach--probably a Newell. I would also be interested in fuel economy comparisons and other operating statistics if you have any available yet.

The program has gone very well, with excellent reliability and good service in the field. This is currently the standard equipment powertrain. We have completed one of the 600 h.p. CATs with the new, uprated version of the Allison MH4000 transmission. This is also an excellent performer. The 600/Allison is optional for those that prefer the smoother shifting characteristics of the Allison over the more "mechanical" and sporty feel of the ZF. Both CAT combinations are getting fuel mileage comparable to the 515 h.p. Detroit Series 60, the range during break-in being between about 5 1/4 m.p.g. for 75 m.p.h. cruising pulling a tow vehicle to about 7 m.p.g. at 65 m.p.h. without a vehicle in tow. We expect the numbers to go up a bit as the engines are broken in, but it appears that the CAT ACERT technology is providing fuel economy comparable to the Series 60 even at the higher horsepower ratings. And sure, we'd be happy to talk with you about trading the Marathon for a Newell. Besides the power advantage, the ZF suspension rides and handles on an entirely new level, and the steerable tag should make the deal!
