Default Fuel filter question

Is anyone using gauges on their fuel filters?
How do you determine when to change your filters? Once a year? So many miles?

I change mine at each oil change and carry extra filters in case I get a bad batch of fuel out on the road. I've only had to replace filters "on the road" once in 35 years!! I try to fuel up at reputable stations and I use a high quality fuel conditioner.
