Default Ventura Sojourn

Just returned from a 4 day trip to Ventura, CA. Just a few miles north of Ventura is a section of the "old" HWY 1, or Pacific Coast Highway, that runs parallel to HWY 101. The county has designated 125 50' spots that run end to end for dry camping along a 1 mile section of the old highway. This is one of our favorite local getaways. All 125 spots are on a "first come, first served" basis....NO reservations. From Memorial Day to Labor Day it is almost impossible to get a spot unless you arrive Sunday afternoon as the weekenders are leaving. After October 1st you can usually drive up on a Thursday morning and have the pick of a couple dozen open spots. This is what we did this past Thursday. We spent parts of 4 days, and 3 nights 50 feet from the breaking waves, and watching the sun set each evening. It was cool, but sunny on Thursday, but was overcast the last three days. Temperature all 4 days was in the mid 60's, with a gentle breeze.

The first two pictures were taken while standing on the railroad tracks across the highway and up the hill about 50 feet. The third was taken on our way back from a 30 mile bicycle ride, and lunch in Ventura. Shows the long line of RV's stretched north along the old HWY 1. The fourth picture is my view while I "worked" on Thursday, and the last picture is how each day ended for us.

Wow, neat place. So if you're not the first one there you get to parallel park?
We'll still planning to do something the week before Thanksgiving, haven't decided where yet. Louisiana hasn't gotten cool yet! setting heat records! and it's snowing everywhere else. Whatcha' say about that Mr. AlGore?

Sweet, we love that. Thanks for the posting, Clarke. We are now in Albany, NY and the leaves are peaking. We are in a City campground which has EWS50amp. We have a spot right on the river with a generous yard, at 27 bucks per night. Gonna be here til Friday and then off to Amish country. Been a great 3 1/2 weeks with that much to go. Cape Cod was nice and Nantucket was off the charts. Biked a 30 miler there on bike trails and some spectacular scenery. Your Ventura County spot makes us envious for sure. This country is so big and what a great great way to see it. Matt was right, Thank you Newell!!!!!
