Default Towing with a trailer

I am considering towing a trailer behind the Newell, primary reason is this would allow us to take either vehicle with us, (Prius/Wrangler), depending on where we are going. Those of you that do take a trailer, do you have issues in RV parks with room to park it? I know this will limit to some degree our ability to choose parks, but realistically how much of a problem have most of you run into? Do any of you have a "rock guard" on the front of the trailer, (flatbed) have you found you need one?

John

One thing that would really be helpful is to have a hitch on your car so you could move the trailer around instead of having to use the coach.

There is no way that I would consider a trailer. Many times over the years I have encountered situations where I have had to disconnect the car to be able to relocate the coach. With the car in a trailer, I have no idea what problems I may have encountered trying to disconnect and move the trailer out of the way by hand. Also, many RV parks simply do not have room for both a trailer and a car. Why manhandle a trailer when it is so easy to disconnect the car and park it? Camping World carries various items for protecting the car. Seems to me it would be much cheaper to equip two cars to be pulled vs the cost of a trailer.

I agree with Chester. I pull a 1500 ram with a Goldwing, BMW, and Bicycle in the bed. I have a ramp on the back of the Newell which I can carry a RZR, golf cart, or possible a smart car which I haven't tried to do yet. The only draw back is that everthing usually has to be washed when I settle in. You would probably will be cleaning the trailer and coach anyway so the work is about the same. I have been in several situations where I have had to unhook the truck to be able to get myself out of situation where if I had been pulling a trailer I still would be there. Trailers are possible for full timing when you don't have enough room in the M/C storage.

John

We run a 42.5 foot Newell and pull a 30 foot stacker to carry our toys (RZR, Jeep, Zodiac Boat ) keeps them clean and secure
So far no problems with RV sites, we do use
1) Escapees RV Club
2) The Day's End Directory
3) www.big-rigs-rv.com

That's a darn nice V-nose trailer! Nice share. And I have to assume it matches the coach? Is it 30 feet including the tongue and 26' of main deck? That would put you at a total length of 72.5 feet.

Yes sir it is
Paint on the bus is a little different (one color) as the stacker came after the bus and we have not got to the 'repaint' yet as we have been putting the bus in to the shape we wanted it the last two years

Nice trailer, a little more then I need, although I'll bet given some time I could probably fill it. I appreciate the info, I'm trying to decide between an enclosed trailer and an open flatbed. I like the ability to keep things clean with the enclosed trailer.

Whatsnewell has a nice setup. Don't remember what size enclosed trailer he's pulling but he has a T-bird inside + a few bikes and a lot of tools. It makes a great workshop when he's parked somewhere. I'm jealous!

Ron, perhaps you can post a photo of the ramp attached to the Newell to carry you RZR. I have an RZR, but do not have a pickup to haul it.

Littlebit, at 72.5', I believe you are illegal in California, and perhaps other states. Just curious.

Larry, as always that is a beautiful set-up of yours. I guess one has to avoid those states or switch things up from time to time.

Im pretty sure were 65' in Canada also, I think certain roads allow commercial trucks to be longer as I have seen 2 53' vans behind a tractor trailor unit. only on twin highways, Alberta and Saskatchewan allows a triple combination as long as you are under 65', but BC doesn't, would be nice to tow a toad and a boat, but the only way to get under that length is a pick-up and a fifth wheel with a boat behind. I cant fit 5 kids and a wife in a pick-up and last time I checked Newell doesn't build fifth wheels!

Chester: I pull the Ram 1500 short bed with the Goldwing 1800 and BMW K1200S in it. The truck allow me to haul the RZR to the trail heads when you can't drive the RZR. The Motorcycles allow me and my wife to have separate mean of transportation when we are stationary.

Ron, I like it. Did you fabricate it or is it sold commercially?

I did fabricate here locally. The coach did already have the three receiver so I did not have to do anything to the coach. The same shop that made the ramp for my 89 did this one. I have about 2K if I remember right. The one on the 89 was about 3K. They both work great. I sold the one off of the 89 here to a guy who put it on a 36 Wini to haul a golf cart.
