Default Smart Wheel

Guess this goes in the Interior category. My coach started acting very strange, the wipers would come on by themselves, the cruise control would cut off, etc. All things that happen thru the SmartWheel. Newell knew immediately what it was and they shipped me the "clocksping" papertape (coiled copper wiring) that sits UNDER the steering wheel.

Apparrently it's from a Chevrolet pickup and it was nearly $500 from Newell for basically a roll of brown paper with two flat copper "wires" glued to it.

I pulled the steering wheel, after making some centering marks, and replaced the "clockspring." All the gremlins left. Of course, my centering marks were off and the wheel had to come off again, but NBD.

Barry,

I ran into a similar situation on a prior motor coach. In that case the way the turning of the wheel was handled was with two slip rings and brushes. One day one of the brushes no longer made contact with the ring and all kinds of bad things happened and would not work! It's pretty neat how all that informaion is multiplexed over just the two wires and quickly enough that you don't notice any delay when you initiate a function. I just came back from the Ford garage recently as my F150 had to go in for the "clock spring" recall. Seems it was rubbing and could fail disabling the air bag. Glad you got yours going again even at a premium price. Later, Russ
