I am stuck between 2 Newell's, One has a Cummins V555 and the other has the Silver Series 6v92. Which one is considered the better of the 2 engines? Need help quick wife wants to hit the road super soon.

The 6V92 is noisier, prone to oil leaks and has more power potential. The 555 is almost obsolete, easier to work on and very reliable. Part availability can be a problem but I've always found whatever I need for mine. The 555 was used in short haul trucks and off road/agricultural equipment. I love the sound of a 4 stroke V-8 too! My 555 is turbo-charged and has adequate power but comes up short in the hills. I've considered playing with the boost or adding propane but we're on vacation so I'm usually not in a hurry.

At this point in time, the engine that has been maintained the best and is in the best condition would be my recommendation. With proper maintenance and care either engine will have lot's of good miles left in it. If not maintained properly, constantly lugged down, left to run low on oil or allowed to overheat, most diesel engines could be a problem. The 555 will get better mileage but not have the power, particularly in mountains that the 6V92 will.

I have seen DD92 series replaced at 100k miles due to overheating (the number one killer of DD92's). I have also seen DD92's that are virtually leak free and going strong at well over 200k miles.

I was thinking hard about the 6v92T because of the added HP and the mileage does not bother me for the fact that I was already expecting 6-8MPG. Wanted to hear it from other owners. I have heard a lot of neg. about the V555 don't know whats true and whats not true.

Stan, you might PM Joseph "The Newell" on this site. He has postings regarding his V555.
