side window on slide

the slide/shade that pulls up from the bottom that is built in by newell only comes up about half the way and hits a had stop and will not stay there.

any wisdom on how to get at it or to get it to work properly?

Yes, I have been there and dealt with that.

Yours looks the same so I will tell you what I did to get mine working again. In my case, there is one "10 lb catch" at the top right when looking at the shade from the inside. The fixed portion is on the shade, and the movable portion ( the part of the catch with the actual latch and spring ) does not move with the shade. The pop rivets had come out so it was necessary to remove the enitre wall to get access and replace the catch.
Now mine would go all the way up, just not stay there. I cannot imagine why yours hits a stop, but that will probably be obvious once to disassemble the wall.
Start by bringing in the slide about half way. Remove the valence that runs the entire length of the slide. It just sits in a channel and is removed by pushing up on it from the bottom. Two people would make removal easier and safer. I was able to remove the wall without removing the covering from the window behind the couch, but could not install the wall without removing that cover, so I would renmove that cover before I remove the wall if doing it again. If you look between the window and the cover you will see drywall type screws that must be removed.

how does the picture window upholstered cover panel come off?

Look behind the panel on the right and left side and look for the heads of screws. On mine there were two screws on each side. Remove the screws and pull out at the bottom, pressing down on the top of the couch cushions, or opening into bed position if that is an option, and then it slides down and out at the top. There was enough wire length on the lights to set it aside without have to disconnect them.

We ran in to same problem with our 2001 coach, you pull it all the way up and just slams it down on its own ! very loud noise ! very first tiem we did not know where the noise came from!
On the 3000 miles trip from Newell we used shor PVC pipe to keep it up !
Great tutorial ! I hope I can get to it after I put in new fridge sine the old one just stopped working!

I spoke with Newell about the slide window , why so haevy and dont latch, thay only said , they all said : thay all do that!
I think ist teh latch sytem mad of heavy plastic is not holding thsi super heavy double pane window1 but again dont know for sure!

Once you get the latch system working right it will hold the window slide closed. I do open the slide when I travel. Although the latches are plastic they are amazingly strong. You'll probably find that the latch part is broken or the mounting is bent. The first basement compartment on the right side of my coach uses the same latch so check yours and you'll see how the latches work.

I feel for you with the ice storm damage. We get them in Missouri and they play havic with trees & power lines.

making progress on fixing the slide window shade. i took the top valence off like russ said. it was stuck so had to spend some time getting it off. my side cover over the window was held on with screws and not the latches. i found a couple of things. first is the latch was broken. second was the shade was caught beneath the window trim ring. that was because the side rail tracks on each side of the shade that newell had made out of soft pine had broken and the shade was moving around too much. i spent several hours figuring out how to get the end of the couch off to gain access to the window. btw, i also took off the big window upholstered window cover and darlene is going to reupholster it in a color she likes better.

i made new side rails for the window shade to slide up and down in out of oak which should be alot stronger.

i ordered ten new soutco latches since they are all over the inside of the coach.

we took the window blind out for darlene to clean up and the brackets broke of course so i ordered a bunch of them to have.

while it is all apart i will put the silicone on the slide to seal up the slide air bags.

installed the new guide rails i made out of oak. replace the plastic latch and got it mostly done. have to do a little fine tuning on it yet but very close to being done with it.

the new rails worked perfect till i put the entire side back together. then it was bound up.

so i took it all apart and moved the inside rail over about 1/8" and remounted it.

put it all together and finally works good now.

the oak rails should never wear out, better than the factory.
