«~» Automotive safety standards are set to be revolutionized by dramatically shortening stopping
distances, thanks to Siemens’ Electronic Wedge Brakes.

«~» EWB represent a complete rethink of brake technology and are not to be confused with the
electro-hydraulic Sensotronic brakes introduced by Mercedes-Benz in 2001 (and subsequently
removed from sale early this year due to unsolved reliability issues). The EWB uses state-of-the-art
electronics, along with a new type of caliper which encloses a series of wedge-shaped rods that
help press the pads onto the disc and provide the sort of stopping ability existing hydraulic
units cannot match.

«~» The EWB require just one-tenth of the actuating energy required by today’s hydraulic brakes.

«~» Some of the gain in stopping power is put down to lightning reflexes. Conventional hydraulic
brakes require the build-up of forces before the caliper is able to grip the disc. Typically, it takes about
150 milliseconds from when the brake pedal is triggered until the pads deploy against the disc.
The new EWB stoppers, however, are claimed to require less than 100 milliseconds — a reduction
of more than 33 percent.

«~» The faster you are traveling when they are applied, the more powerful they become.

«~» An industry source said, “We recently ran a test involving two Audi A6 prototypes. One was
fitted with conventional disc brakes, the other with the latest development of wedge brakes.
In exercises that involved the cars braking from 62mph, the prototype with the wedge brakes
regularly required less than half the distance to come to a complete standstill than the prototype
with the standard brakes. The difference is nothing short of amazing.”

«~» As well as providing greatly improved braking ability, wedge brakes are also significantly
lighter than today’s most advanced hydraulic units, leading to a crucial reduction in unsprung
weight – the key to improved handling and added agility.

«~» They are also claimed to be more reliable, with longer service intervals due to the fact that
they have fewer moving parts.

«~» Siemens VDO currently is developing a whole new generation of brakes for possible use in
new vehicle models coming to market at end of the decade.

«~» The new braking architecture enables future driver assistance systems to more quickly access
the brake and in a more targeted fashion. Automotive manufacturers will be able to take
advantage of shorter stopping distances for their new model series, even on ice and snow.
