With temperature guns being so readily available I'm wondering of new uses people have come up for them? I use it often for tires, brakes, and bearings on coach and toad. But I also check the top of the radiator, if it is cool (relative term) I am low on coolant.

I purchased mine from NAPA several years ago. I think it's a Raytech. I paid around $75 on sale at the time, but I've seen them down around $50 in the last few months at various auto parts and tools places.

I use mine for tires, brakes, engine warming, radiator, interior heating, etc. The laser makes a good cat toy, too

After reading other members post on here I'm thinking of picking up one myself. Sounds like a very beneficial item. I have seen techs using them when working on our Newell.

I gave $45 for mine at Sears over a year ago. Harbor freight has them for $39.95 but I don't know the temp. range, and would suspect the reliability.

If you're really adventurous and not worried about reliability...

Another Novel use for the IR temp guns...

Check your Batteries... when charging or discharging. Temp differences between cells can indicate problems
that you wouldn't see until a critical failure....fire... dead or internal short...

Now there's a cheap one Jon. And a guy probably gets what he pays for. Looks the same as the HF's Chicago Electric brand, probably one of the many 1000 brands coming out of the same Chinese factory. Hey if there are good enough reviews than someone could try it and let us know if its OK. Not like most of us are going to use it daily. I know Andrew keeps pretty good track of things utilizing one.

One thing I have found with my IR gun is that you have to hold it about 6" to 8" away from the target to get an accurate reading.

If you shoot an air conditioner register for example from 5' away you may get a reading of 65*. If you hold the IR gun 6" away you may get a reading of 55*. I found this out by reading the directions. You know what they say, "when all fails - read the directions"!

Harbor Freight has some good stuff but don't expect it to last forever.

I have a buddy who owns a trucking company and his mechanics would use one to see the temp of the the front shocks of over the road tractors to see if they were working (travel) the same. If one was hotter than the other they would change them. Thought that was kind of interesting.
