Gray Water Black Sewage tank.....Single or Seperate

Another post I read reminded me that I've been meaning to ask this. What are the advantages and disadvantages of both single or separate tanks.

Having had both, I prefer the single tank. If I spent time in a location where I could discharge gray water but not black water, I would likely have a different opinion. When we had dual tanks, we were always filling up the gray water tank first. I would hate to go back to dual tanks. Newell had a great idea.

Hmm...I was kinda thinking maybe going to a dual tank system or split tank design using a baffle. I can relate to the problem of filling the gray first and like the idea of being able to drain the gray while out dry camping. Now I'm tossed.

Back in the 1990's, we stayed at a couple of state parks that still let you dump gray water on the ground. That would have been the perfect situation for a single tank Newell since all of the gray water can be routed around the waste tank.

Advantages of a single tank - well, just one tank to worry about etc. The gray water helps keep solids from the toilet from settling and forming a blockage in your tank. A lot of RVers are very sparing about using plenty of water in their black tank, wanting to stretch the times between dumping. This can lead to LOTS of troubles. Disadvantages - you have to dump more often, which can be a hassle. Advantages of two tanks, one for gray water & one for black - you can stretch your time between dumping.

Our '82 was up-graded at Newell on the 90's to a Single Tank, in my opinion this is really the way to go. We have Diverter Valves that would allow the Gray Water to be Discharged while the Black Water is kept in the Holding Tank. Or we can have both the Black and Gray go into the Same Tank. Really sounds like a simpler way of handling our discharge.
