460 11/20/2001 6:50:26 PM 11/21/2001 Gene Morace genemorace@hotmail.com Winter mountain driving... Tuga,
No driving tips as far as driving your coach other than go slow. I've never driven my coach in the winter either, but my wife and I are planning to be in Breckenridge for a couple of weeks as well on or about the 10th or 11th of Feburary.
As for the roads in Colorado, they are usually kept in very good condition as far as keeping them clear of snow. I-70 from Denver is usually in good shape unless there is a major storm. The back roads coming out of Colorado Springs could be a little more tricky. I have invested in a set of chains just in case; you might consider the same. I would assume from your address that you are from Louisiana; We will be coming from LA (Lower Alabama). See you in Feburary.

As far as I know, any of the Jeep products (4x4) tow easily with nothing to do but add a tow bar and tail light wiring. The Wrangler is light and hardly noticable, but a little short on room especially for more than 2 people. I am considering the new Jeep Liberty. Larger than the Wrangler and smaller than the Grand Cherokee.

The U-Line ice makers we used through the 80s and into the early 90s appear to be identical to the Instamatic units.

Some parts for older model Instamatic icemakers are still available from U-Line. We suggest you call U-Line customer service at 414-354-0300. It would be helpful if you had the model number of the ice maker, as well as the dimensions of the ice bucket. The part number for the bucket you referenced is obsolete.

477 12/26/2001 2:51:09 PM 12/26/2001 K.H. 'Ki' Punilei khpaladin@aol.com Merge Switch and Solenoid I found that our 1981 Newell has only one merge switch which is mounted in the front 'House' battery compartment. As TechTalk noted above one side of the merge switch is tied to the 'engine' batteries and the other side is tied to the 'house' batteries. The dash 'Merge" switch is wire the same way with 'house' on one side and 'engine' on the other, with power to the solenoid from the middle pole.

As TechTalk noted above the batteries can be merged by the solenoid powered by either bank of batteries. When on shore power I use the dash switch in 'house' position to charge batteries through the ProSine 2500 inverter/charger. When driving down the road I use the dash switch in 'engine' position to charge batteries through the alternator. When the coach is in storage with no power supply, the dash switch is in the 'OFF' position. I also put both 'house' and 'engine' battery master disconnects in the 'OFF' position to alliviate draining either battery bank.

Best Regards,

Ki and the 'Redhead'

479 1/1/2002 4:09:10 AM 1/1/2002 pat mchale patmchale1@yahoo.com Winter mountain driving... Most roads in Colorado are kept in decent shape in the winter. They may be snow packed and icy though. We have had our 34'to Breck around Christmas and didn't have any problems with the ice.The # for road conditions is; 303-639-1111. I would defenitely disconnect the tow vehicle. The extra weight in back could make for some interesting situations in the mountains. The best advise for driving on snow and ice is slow is better. Forget about brakes and use the engine brake because it is usually not as abrupt.

486 1/24/2002 6:13:28 PM 1/27/2002 1978 Newell purchase We own a '78, but it has a Detroit engine, so I can't speak to the value of the one you are looking at. I think that the engine made quite a difference in the construction of those models. We bought ours 7 years ago at $67.5K. We have put a lot into it, but we remain happy with our investment. It is comfortable, and is built solidly enough that you can remodel and upgrade without throwing your money down the drain.
I would definitely have the major items, such as the engine and transmission checked out. Take a look too at the amount of rust in the underneath compartments and under the coach. Our coaches sometimes have a problem with the aluminum skin reacting to the steel frame below floor level and at front and back. You end up with rusted steel frame or pitting and holes in the skin. If you find any of that, it's probably worth having a truck or bus body shop check it out. The Newell factory will eventually fix ours when we are ready.
It is probably best to try hard to be objective in adding up how much will have to be replaced in the first couple of years, but it is best to do so. That way you are going into it with your eyes open.
For all of that caution, we are very happy with our coach. When we take it to the factory, we hear a lot from the older guys about how well they built them in those days, just as they do today.
Bottom line, once you have a sense for costs to get it the way you want it, and you have heard about the pluses and minuses of that engine (call Newell at 1-888-3Newell), you will probably be able to make a good decision. I think you will find the factory service guys willing to give you a good assessment.
Sincerely,
Dick Quirk

Those mounting plates are L shaped, and flare out, providing a hole for bolting the tank to the frame of the coach. There is also considerable rust on the bottom of the tank, so I am assuming the tank needs replacement. We live in the DC area. 500 2/4/2002 6:28:59 PM 2/9/2002 Rich Farr toptin@aol.com 1978 Newell purchase Dear Pat,
We have recently purchased a 79 Newell 38 1/2 with a Detroit 6V92 (non turbo) and Allison 5 speed. We paid top dollar but it is in exceptional condition. Even so, it surprising what all is needed, just to get it baselined before we venture too far from home. We had previously looked at a 73 with a Cummins 555. Also a 82 with a Cummins 903. After talking to Cummins, we passed on the 555 because they are hard to get parts for. Other owners have also relayed that they are underpowered. The cost of an engine swap is prohibitive - so you want to get one with an engine you can live with. The 903 Cummins has plenty of power and parts are somewhat more available. We went for the 6V92DD. They are more complex and noisy - but seem to be the most popular (from a service standpoint). If in good shape, they will last a long time. Bottom line - we would rather have an older Newell - than a much newer fiberglass coach. They have the potential of being a 'classic' - sort of like a '57 Chevy. They always draw a crowd. Success on your efforts.

509 2/25/2002 5:35:53 AM 2/25/2002 TechTalk Staff techtalk@newellcoach.com license Typically, an ordinary motor vehicle driver's license is all that is required. A couple of exceptions we are aware of: California's new regulations extending the legal length limit to 45 feet has some special requirements for an endorsement allowing the operation of vehicles in excess of 40 feet. This requirement extends only to operators carrying California motor vehicle licenses. Out-of-state drivers can operate coaches up to 45 feet in California without special licensing. In addition, in all states, if a coach is being operated commercially, such as a corporate hospitality coach, a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) may be required. However, under most circumstances, a valid basic operator's license is all that is required. In addition, we have never seen the CDL requirement enforced. Attempts to require additional special licensing have been consistently defeated based primarily upon the excellent safety statistics for large coaches, with much lower accident and fatality rates than passenger cars. My problem was finding someone who removed fuel tanks and did welding. I finally gave up and lined two garbage cans with several heavy duty plastic garbage bags and using an old shurflo water pump transfered the 60 gallons of fuel into the cans. It was than pretty easy to pull the tank and haul it to the local welding shop. Be sure they weld around the mounts and the fitting. Also make sure to flush it with a little diesel before installing. Now, using the same pump, put the fuel back in. An old water hose, a used water pump(from your rig?) and some hose clamps is all you need.

On a more serious note, you might want to check your rear slack adjusters to insure your rear duals are doing their job. If all the stuff/junk in your cabinets slid forward and your wife was screaming at you, your brakes are probably fine. Stopping 30,000 lbs real quick is not an option. I owned a 79 for 8 years (140,000 miles) and never had to lock the brakes. I did reposition (back to front)assorted items within the coach on several occasions (following to close or not paying attention, according to my wife). Anti-skid brakes are possible, but the cost will probably equal the price of a new low end coach, and you will still not stop as fast as you would like.

We have a 1979 38 1/2 foot with 6V92DD and Allison 5 speed.
It is very well made and we have seen a few approaching 500K miles. It is wise to keep them under roof and on cement to avoid rust on undercarriage. Ours has 105K and we have had no major problems - just small stuff like awning springs, heaters, light bulbs, etc. We did have to change our power converter (battery charger) and our air leveling system is NWR. I change my own oil, filters, etc. We especially love the fact that nothing is computerized - so it makes things more friendly for the do-it-yourselfer. One thing we would love about a 1987 is the 102" wide. If it has tag axle, that will give you better braking, but you still need to slow down descending hills. Tag axle also requires class B driver's license (in this state). The 8V92 has more power (probably a 475HP) Ours is 285HP and a little anemic in the mountains - but for 10+MPG we can live with it. We cruise very comfortably at freeway speeds. As you can see, we like to talk Newell. Let us know if you would like additional conversation. Thanks.

I suggest you stop by the factory to see how they are built, it is truly amazing the amount of steel they put into the unit. Unless your unit has over a quarter million miles on it, you should be ok engine and drive train wise ( I have 250,000 miles on my 87 and have only had to replace the starter (Alaska '00)

You can expect to work on the air ride system due to the number of valves and wires, but if you keep the connections clean and use it on a regular basis the cost will be minimal. Newells are kind of like helicopters, the more you fly them, the less things leak and break. If something does go wrong, stop and think (KISS),I have wasted more money replacing things that were not broken than I care to think about. Always check your grounds and fuses first, and be sure to give the item a 'little' love tap, before replacing it. One of Newells major strengths is the use of laminates inside, they are easy to clean and last forever. We have found that wood just doesn't hold up to long time use. I also like the metal exterior and Imron paint. Compare an '87 Newell exterior to an 87 fibreglass counterpart (outdoor parking) and you can definitely see the difference.

A 1987 Newell is an awesome coach (one of my favorites)and (with reasonable maintenance) it should last several hundred thousand miles without major system problems.
It is probably 102" wide as opposed to older 96" wide - big nice difference.
The 8V92 is a very good engine and is not hard to get service on Detroit Diesels. It is most likly 475HP with turbo. FYI - all detroit 2 cycle diesels use oil - so don't be alarmed.
We own a 1979 with 6V92DD and 5 speed Allison transmission. It is adequately powered, but definitely not an 8V92 turbo.
It gets good mileage however, so we can live with it.
If the 1987 has a tag axle, you will have better braking, but you still need to keep speed down and use jake brake when going down hills/grades. The tag axle also requires a class B driver's license in this state. Our coach is still running on original engine and transmission with 105K total miles. The worst problems we have had so far have been the heaters and power converter. All the electric heaters had to be replaced and the gas heaters currently need to be serviced. This is really minor stuff however, and you can do most yourself. You will need to become familiar with all the Newell systems - we labeled everything since there was no owners manual for 1979. As you can see, we like to talk abvout Newells. Send us an email if you care for more rhetoric.

526 3/2/2002 3:03:58 PM 3/2/2002 TechTalk Staff techtalk@newellcoach.com 79 Newell air leveling Frankly, the first air leveling systems (pre-1981) are fairly crude, with manual slide-valves, and do not operate very reliably. Even new, they were often a challenge. If you want a good air leveling system, the Newell factory service department could either sell you an HWH 600 leveling system (go to: http://www.hwhcorp.com/600series.html ) in do-it-yourself kit form (would require a pretty good heavy duty mechanic to install properly) or we could do the full installation for you in the Newell service department. The downside is that you're looking at several thousand dollars for a retrofit. When you compare the costs, a good set of leveling blocks is pretty tempting.

Most have found that they can adjust the single shade adequately to work as a sun shade for both driver and co-pilot, although the adjustment flexibility is more limited than dual shades.

532 3/3/2002 2:05:43 PM 3/3/2002 TechTalk Staff techtalk@newellcoach.com Auto-start Generator The Newell factory staff is generally not inclined favorably toward the auto start feature for generators. Auto start is not a listed option for new coaches, although we will install it in production upon request. We see several problems. For example, if the system is turned on, it will start the generator even when inappropriate. Such as, the coach is stored in an enclosed building, plugged in. There is a power failure. After two or three days running off batteries, the voltage will decrease to the point where the generator starts automatically. The diesel engine running inside the enclosed building will soot up the building and the interior of the motorhome. Or perhaps the owner or a mechanic is working on the generator, having forgotten to turn off the auto start. If the auto start choses to try to start the generator, serious injury can result. Finally, we have found the auto start systems less than perfectly reliable, sometimes failing to start the generator as the batteries are depleted. This can create some consequences, perhaps a refrigerator/freezer full of spoiled food, perhaps worse. There is a lot to be said for simply starting the generator manually when needed, and turning it off when not.

I looked around the coach and noticed water dripping from the tankage compartment hole plug. I openned the bay door and discovered the "smell" was "black" water in the tankage compartment? I looked through both sides but could not see the source of the leak? Does anyone have any ideas on where to begin to look? And how to locate where the leak may be? The reason I say "black" water is because presently I have the main dump valve closed, and the pneumatic valve open. I believe this enables all "grey" water to exit directly to the sewer line, and keeps only the "black" water in the tank. I have already emptied the tank just in case I was getting a false reading on my display. How do I find the leak if indeed it is a leak?

My emergency flashers work fine front and back. Is there a separate relay for each light? If so, where do I find them? Is the relay easy to replace? My tow vehicle right signal works also. Where do I begin troubleshooting?

564 4/2/2002 2:56:42 PM 4/2/2002 TechTalk Staff TechTalk@newellcoach.com Rear turn signal not flashing The turn signal is controlled by a silver Stancor single pole relay located on the rear terminal board. This is at the right rear corner of the coach accessed from outside. If you can't find the matching relay locally, call Newell Parts (1-888-3NEWELL) and ask them to ship you Newell part number NC8726.

570 4/14/2002 6:42:50 PM 4/14/2002 Rich Farr Toptin@aol.com battery charger Our 79 Newell has a 80Amp converter (battery charger\DC power supply) and today (when main batteries were dead) we discovered that it only charges coach battery (in front) - not the ones that start the engine (in the back).
Is there a heavy duty splitter (or some other option) to charge all batteries from the converter (and engine driven alternator) - and still separate the coach load from main engine batteries?
Thanks in advance.

571 4/14/2002 7:56:54 PM 4/14/2002 TechTalk Staff TechTalk@newellcoach.com battery charger Your coach has a three-position rocker switch on the instrument panel labeled "Merge." With the rocker switch in the center position, the coach and engine start batteries are isolated, with the converter/charger charging only the house batteries and the alternator charging only the engine start batteries. With this switch pushed in at the top or bottom, the batteries will be interconnected through an electric solenoid located on the electrical terminal panel at the right rear corner of the coach. When merged, either the converter charger or the alternator will charge both the house and the engine start batteries. The solenoid has a limited life and we recommend replacement annually.

576 4/25/2002 9:46:36 pm 4/26/2002 gene morace genemorace@hotmail.com front brakes i am currently experiencing a poping in the front end when the breaks are applied. It was originally suggested that the "s" cams needed to be greased. This has not corrected the problem. The wheels have not been pulled as of yet, but have had the front end checked and nothing seems to be loose. Any suggestions?

577 4/26/2002 11:02:55 AM 4/26/2002 TeckTalk Staff TechTalk@newellcoach.com FRONT BRAKES We suggest that you lube the suspension arms where they connect to the tower structures on the frame. If this doesn't stop the noise, the sheet metal lining the compartments just ahead of or behind the front wheels may be "oil canning" under stress. If this is happening, welding a strap across the face of the sheet metal will correct the oil canning and the noise.

580 4/28/2002 6:37:35 AM 4/28/2002 John Clark jvclark02@cs.com battery charger Rich:
You might want to check out the new inverter/charger units on the market (Xantrex,Trace etc.) Most of them use a 3 step charging process that really saves your batteries versus the converters one step process. As an added benefit, you can watch your TV, use the microwave, etc., without firing up the generator. It's also nice to leave the ice maker on while traveling, as the engines alternator will keep the house batteries charged going down the road.

I owned a 79 for 8 years and my single most important suggestion would be to keep your 12v electrical connections clean, especially the ground wires. Also, read carefully Newell's Tech staff's last sentence, you can't trouble shoot a bad solenoid with a voltmeter (amps are where the power is; 13.75 volts mean nothing without the amperage flow to support it.
