Had an inverter installed in our motor coach. My question is when we are on shore power do we need to have it on to keep the batteries charged?
I have a Xantrex 458 series Inverter/charger 2000watt

That would depend on what type of inverter you have. Some inverters called 'inverter chargers' have the battery charger built-in Others do not. If not you'll likely have a charger built into your coach that will be passively charging in the background.

Gringo,
you can download an owners manual for the 458 below:
http://www.newellclassic.com/forum/manuals-datasheets/3054-xantrex-458-freedom-series-inverter-charger-owners-manual.html (http://www.newellclassic.com/forum/manuals-datasheets/3054-xantrex-458-freedom-series-inverter-charger-owners-manual.html)
I just looked at it and the 458 is an inverter with a built in 3 stage charger so I believe the inverter does not have to be on for the charger to operate.
If I'm incorrect please correct me,
Joseph
