It runs hot under load, water temp up to 250 degrees F at 5000' elevation. Is this normal and if not any ideas on a remedy? I have cleaned the radiator screen and this did help.

That will tell you what number the coach is. You will have to talk to someone in the sales dept. at Newell to actually find out the year model of the coach. A 97 would be in the 460-480 range, but that is just an @ guess. i had a 99 and it was 536 and they make about 38-40 per year. I now have an 03 that is #655. The 06s today are like 770s.

1681 8/20/2005 8:29:50 AM 8/20/2005 TechTalk Staff TechTalk@newellcoach.com HYDROGEN FUEL CELLS There is nothing yet even remotely approaching a commercially viable system, in existence or proposed, with the power required to operate a large vehicle like a Newell. It appears that the most active projects involve perhaps 50 to 100 horsepower. Our expectation for something that is actually practical for a Newell would be a fuel cell powered generator system. The required power is in the range where development work may be seeing some progress, and an absolutely silent fuel cell powered generator system would be a very attractive feature for a Newell as well as for bus conversions. The market may well be willing to pay, say, $20,000 extra for a silent, vibration-free generator This is still pretty wild stuff, though, and highly unpredictible, so we'd suggest you don't hold your breath in the near or intermediate term.

Paid $112,500 which seemed like the low end of the market at the time. My impression is that the market for these big coaches without slideouts is soft. With the general concerns regarding fuel prices I think that the market will continue to be a buyer's market. I would think in the $140K range - give or take 10% for condition. I am really glad that we bought a Newell. I continue to be impressed by the solid design and reliability of this coach. Good Luck!

This is one of those areas where, yes, it could be done, but most certainly the cost would be prohibitive. Without even checking pricing for all of the required ZF parts (they are expensive), the chassis structure and attachment points, both front and rear, are significantly different for the ZF suspension. Note that the "wheelbase" between the drive and tag axles is longer with the ZF setup. That means the drive axle would be moved forward, requiring the center section of the chassis and the body to be modified. This would be a huge job.

We don't mind doing retrofits if the value is there. For example, we have modified several of the Series 2000 coaches with the original rectangular headlights to the newer design front end with the round Hella Xenon gas discharge projector headlights, at a total cost of about $10,000. But sometimes a retrofit is just way outside of any justifiable cost, and we believe that retrofitting the ZF suspension sits in that category.

I notice that you have only done one so far. Do you plan for CAT's to be a regular option in the future, or was this a custom job?

My experience with CAT power in my yachts has been exceptionally good and although I have a Series 60 in my Prevost/Marathon presently, I am considering CAT for my new coach--probably a Newell. I would also be interested in fuel economy comparisons and other operating statistics if you have any available yet.

1693 8/25/2005 5:42:03 AM 8/25/2005 TechTalk Staff TechTalk@newellcoach.com 625HP Cat We started delivering the big CAT 625s with the ZF AS-Tronic transmissions last winter, and have actually completed about three dozen so far. The program has gone very well, with excellent reliability and good service in the field. This is currently the standard equipment powertrain. We have completed one of the 600 h.p. CATs with the new, uprated version of the Allison MH4000 transmission. This is also an excellent performer. The 600/Allison is optional for those that prefer the smoother shifting characteristics of the Allison over the more "mechanical" and sporty feel of the ZF. Both CAT combinations are getting fuel mileage comparable to the 515 h.p. Detroit Series 60, the range during break-in being between about 5 1/4 m.p.g. for 75 m.p.h. cruising pulling a tow vehicle to about 7 m.p.g. at 65 m.p.h. without a vehicle in tow. We expect the numbers to go up a bit as the engines are broken in, but it appears that the CAT ACERT technology is providing fuel economy comparable to the Series 60 even at the higher horsepower ratings. And sure, we'd be happy to talk with you about trading the Marathon for a Newell. Besides the power advantage, the ZF suspension rides and handles on an entirely new level, and the steerable tag should make the deal!

For example,

What is the year and engine model of your Newell?
Exhaust emissions rules have changed through the years, and different years and different models of engines have different "normal" smoke characteristics.

When do you see black exhaust? Mostly just initial acceleration from idle? During full throttle acceleration on the highway? All of the time?
Typically, black exhuast indicates that the engine is receiving more fuel than it can thoroughly burn. Excess fuel produces black smoke indicating less than complete combustion. Some engines normally produce some smoke on acceleration and during "full throttle" pulls on the highway. In other engine models and years, black smoke is indicative of an incorrect adjustment or wear.

Better advice would be possible with some additional information. That having been said, you most certainly would benefit from a thorough inspection of your engine by a qualified, factory-trained diesel mechanic. We suggest considering the service department of a conveniently located distributor for the engine brand installed in your coach.

The incorporation of multiple slide-outs greatly interfers with a proper layout for the supply air ducts in the side walls of the coach. A good supply air duct system is all but impossible in a four-slide coach. Since the majority of orders for new Newells specifiy four slide-outs, roof air conditioners has become the system of choice. The tranisition to roof a/c's was aided by the new roof designs that all but hide the a/c's from sight.

DirecTV has gone to a different, expanded mix of satellites to provide television service with the availability of additional channels. As a result, many of the mobile satellite systems that are more than, say, two or three years old do not function correctly. Any one of these older systems that is experiencing problems should be referred to a qualified mobile satellite technician for diagnosis. In most cases, new, updated equipment must be purchased and installed to restore proper operation. The Newell Service Department has updated a significant number of coaches to the new equipment. Adjusted properly, the turning radius of a 45 foot Newell with the Dana IFS (1997 - 2004) is approximately 44 feet. With the new ZF suspension, including the active steering tag axle, the turning radius is approximately 37 feet.

Then the length appears. Mine says, "458" for 45'8". Then go to the last four numbers and backup, you'll find the last two digits of the year model. The last three digits run in sequence & are the s/n everyone uses. There's probably even more info contained in the VIN.

It is wired to the speedometer/odometer. However, since the speedo works, it sounds like the problem is in the head rather than the sender. I suggest you call Newell Service on their toll-free number, 1-888-363-9355 and speak with a service advisor. They can discuss the diagnosis in more detail, and arrange to send you a new speedometer head if that is the agreed approach.

I removed one of the bad headlamps- located on the bottom of the front of the vehicle, and it has a seriel # E6 Valeo 63125003, made in France stamped in black found on the top of the golden lamp (on the metal part). Found on the inside- or back- of the thick glass lens cover are rows of vertical stripes- or lines- with the outline of a cat's head inside a circle in the center of the glass. On the outside of the glass there is TOP, SAE F77 (in small letters) and underneath that are the numbers 950, in big numerals, with IODE (med. letters) and sev marchal in small letters. All located in the center of the glass. To the left (when facing the glass) is the letter B inside a square, under that an E2 inside a circle, and under that the number 67. Better make that 5 (one extra just in case). Can I order it directly from Newell or can someone refer me to where they can be obtained? I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

For example, the Chevrolet Caprice used these headlights in the 1977 models on for several years. That said, from your description, you may be trying to replace the fog/driving lights that were mounted below the headlights in the bumper. In that case, you can select whatever replacement light you wish that fits the opening and meets your needs.

Prior to 19890, manufacturers were free to devise their own systems for constructing VINs. We turned this specific question over to Marcia, our now retired, long-time customer secretary. She has responded as follows:

"800RE1032D2537N" - I think this is probably 3800RE1032D2537N meaning 38 foot, rear engine, 1032 (the actual serial number that you keep track of), D for diesel, 253 inch wheelbase, built in July 1979 if N is indeed the code number for 1979. I don't have the numbers to go by, but by doing the math on my fingers, I think N does stand for 1979.

The maximum, with roof air conditioners on a late model coach, is 13' 2". When generally recommend a 14' door to be safe. Anything under about 13' 6" makes it prudent to measure the coach and the door very carefully.
