1331 6/17/2004 6:04:26 AM 6/20/2004 Doug86 Sharing Info with classic owners! I have an 86 that I have been thinking of putting Pergo type flooring in. I used it to build a bar recently and like the way that turned out. I also want to get rid of the twin bed setup and go to a queen, some other minor interior updates also. Still need to get setup so that I can run all 3 A/C's. The main breaker keeps tripping if I use the center air.

In these installations, a single monitor switches automatically to the appropriate side veiw when the directional signal is used, or the driver can manually select any camera to display on the monitor using a switch. At Newell, we accomodate a great many custom features on customer request. An in-dash installation of three monitors could be done, although it would probably involve compromises in terms of location, with issues including visability of the monitors and the need to find alternative locations for other displaced components requiring resolution. We look forward to your order.

1348 6/26/2004 7:31:24 AM 6/26/2004 TechTalk Staff TechTalk@newellcoach.com Switch 4-speed to 6speed trans. The 6-speed Allison World Transmission incorporates an electronic control module (computer) designed to interface with a modern diesel engine also equipped with electronic controls. Your 3208 Cat does not have electronic controls and therefore is not compatible with these new Allison transmissions. If your transmission is worn out or malfunctioning, we suggest you consider repair or overhaul by a qualified Allison facility, or replacing the transmission with a quality rebuilt non-electronic unit. The transmission capacity would not be the limiting factor for trailer towing. You should confirm and respect the capacity of the hitch. Many of the factory original hitches are rated at 5000 pounds, although upgrade hitches can be installed if desired. The limited power of the 3208 Cat engine would also be a consideration, as a heavy trailer would degrade the performance considerably, especially hill climbing,.

Examined underneath and discovered one broken leaf in right rear spring. Also air bags slightly out of alignment. Looks like centering bolt through middle of leaf spring might have sheared/broken and slipped things back a bit. Still drives perfect and roads in Texas weren't that rough. The engine in the Newell is one of the most efficient engines made. The Detroit Diesel turbocharged engine is an engineering marvel and has flawless performance. The advantage of the diesel electric concept is the high efficiency multiplication of torque for the train engines. The Allison transmission is also an engineering marvel. It will be a long time before hydrogen will be flowing through pipelines. Every leak turns into a 5000 degree invisible flame, and it results in tremendous explosions. At the Stennis Space Center they have to purge the pipelines for 2 days with pure nitrogen before unloading the liquid hydrogen off the barges. Any oxygen left in the pipe is self-cleaning because after the explosion they have to replace the pipe line! With a hydrogen economy there is not enough natural gas to power the electic plants to decompose water into hydrogen and oxygen. In other words a hydrogen economy is a long way off despite what some of the "green" politicians say. Bio-fuel such as alcohol is a political issue and would be moot without government subsidies. How much diesel fuel does it take to grow and harvest enough corn to make a gallon of alcohol? A corn farm with an alcohol plant on it will be an energy sink, i.e., it will take a lot more energy to operate than it can produce.

1362 7/4/2004 4:19:59 PM 7/4/2004 g j gregbusj@aol.com New Tires I operate an entertainer's coach, currently using Michelin XZAs on all axles. When new tires are needed, I put them on the steer axle, usually for a maximum of 50-60,000 miles. They are removed before any typical steer axle wear patterns start, and they are rotated back to the bogie or drive axle. Occasionally new tires are required for the drive axle out of this sequence, mounted as a new pair (never an old tire mated to a new tire). Bogie axle never gets new tires, due to the greater amount of scuffing they seem to endure. This formula has worked well for almost 20 years, without a road failure.
Monitor tire pressure often!!

1363 7/6/2004 9:35:23 PM 7/7/2004 Dean Stoops 67gto@myvine.com New Tires Many racers use Nitrogen. The greatest advantage for them is that the pressure stays constant over a greater temperature range. I replaced all 6 of my tires with Goodyear Wingfoot "steer" tires. [Editor's note: Newell had good experience with Goodyear tires prior to 1997. However, with the change to 315/22.5 metric sized tires, we experienced very poor reliability with Goodyear tires, with sudden tread separations and blowouts. Therefore, we do not recommend Goodyear tires in the 315/22.5 size.] They work well...smooth and quiet. I'm thinking that the main reason the "big rigs" use different tires on the rear is for traction while accelerating. Since I dont drive my coach in the snow or mud I felt OK with trading traction for smooth and quiet.

My interest is in clean quiet electricity generation. It seems that I read about a generator that used Hydrogen to produce electricity through a chemical reaction. The initial application considered was for RV use. At the moment I'm considering solar panels on the roof. I'd be interested in comments from anyone who has experience or knowledge about either of these technologys.

My '78 had wedge brakes. When one of the rear actuators pushed it's way off of the backing plate I decided to upgrade to S cam style.I bought all of the "non wearing" parts from a salvadge yard ( backing plates, rocker arms, and brackets etc.). I purchased new actuators, shoes, and drums. The braking capacity was increased by approximately 20%. The front brakes are still "wedge" but I'll convert them as well when they need replacement. I was very satisfied with the performance of the original brakes but decided to upgrade to more commonly available components.

I believe our coach also has the wedge brakes since the actuators sit differently from the trucks I have examined. They work well, but am considering upgrade for same reasons - especially on the rear. Question - are the brakes, shoes, etc., the same size, or did you need to change hubs? Also, how about the air balancing valves and controls? If you have any BOM you could share, it would be much appreciated.

Installed 4 new Gabriel shocks on my '82 36', results were unsatisfactory. Very bad bounce. So installed Koni's on the front, at a mid setting, much improved result. Koni instructions say the total adjustment range is 5 half turns. Jon K's description sounds like his might be a little different. Considering putting Koni's on rear also and setting front even firmer. Comments anyone? My experience is to spend the extra money for Koni's. Also appreciate flooring comments. Carpet just too hard to keep clean. Any ideas on how to open rear windows without getting a hernia? Just finished over 4000 miles Fl to San Diego towing light car. Engine temps a concern during high altitude climbs in Western states, up to 210 and sometimes higher. Temps normally 190 to 200 at level cruise. 1372 7/12/2004 10:04:00 AM 7/14/2004 Dean Stoops 67gto@myvine.com 12.5 Kohler Diesel Generator That Perkins was widely used in both Newell and B.Bird. Mine works great but is noisy as well. Several things I am considering. Much of the noise outside seems to come through the radiator. I'm condsidering modifying the front cover so that it extends out away from the body , filling the gap between the body and the front bumper. Imagine a "air scoop" similar in shape to GM's cowl induction hoods only placed vertically so it draws the air in from below the bumper. I have already done a "mock-up" with cardboard and it seemed to not affect cooling at all.
Another modification I am considering is to mount the whole gen exhaust system to the cradle so that it moves with the gen when you slide it out, thus avoiding having to crawl under to loosen that pipe union. When I do that I'll be looking for a quieter muffler as well!
I'd be interested in any other ideas to HUSH IT up!!!!

If I remember correctly we used the same hubs but the drums were 1" larger in diameter. Am I right in thinking the drums can be removed from the hub? I remember seeing the new drums, shoes and actuators laying there in the shop. I believe the new brakes are rated for 20,000#. I'm not aware of any adjustments that were made to the air system. This work was done at my buddy's shop. He owned a trucking Co. at the time with several qualified brake tech.s so I just let them do it and trusted them to set it up right. I think the cost was around $1000.00.
Sorry, Rich I don't know what BOM is!

Just completed major service: adjust valves (.012 cold), antifreeze (50/50), oil (Mobil 15/40), filters (fuel & oil), clean electrical connections, bead-blast, paint engine, check/adjust fan belt and idler pulley, hoses, misc & etc..
Oil capacity (on ours) is 10 US quarts (79 year model).
Don't try changing Perkins fuel filter unless you are a pro and/or have book with 'correct' pictures and air bleed sequence instructions. Got serious 4 hour education on that piece of project. Lot's of colorful metaphors. Playing mechanic could endanger a man's relationship with our great Creator. Wife finally came to rescue with cold and calming liquid refreshment\humor. As usual, if the guy who designed it had to work on it, he would have made it 'lots' friendlier. Works great now, but would still like to top off service by having injectors (Perkins = Atomizers) cleaned/tested if can find good diesel shop in Tulsa area that does Perkins. Recommendations welcomed.
Also need to say - The info exchange on this bulletin board is tremendous for helping us keep our classic Newell in top condition. Appreciate all conversations and info exchange.

To: John L; We have the same shocks, I just called it clicks for some stupid reason, I'm at setting 4 out of 5. I have the same problem sliding all the windows open. I tried all sorts of lubricants and nothing helped. I had been told that installing new welting would make them perhaps even stiffer, but in my attempt to cut down on winter drafts I needed to install new welting on the copilot's window and the window in the door. Gary Streeter at Newell Parts sold me the welting and I sprayed the groove with Dow Corning 557 Aluminum Lubricant prior to installing the welting. The windows freed up and are easy to slide. I suspect that the lubricant, which dries and still lubes, allows the welting to give slightly as the window slides so that it doesn't get tight. I'm thinking of changing the welting on all the sliding windows. If I do I'll let you all know how it worked. Now, if anyone knows of a source for the rubber seal for the fixed part of the sliding window where the glass fits into the groove I'd like to be nnotified. If you use silicone RTV as someone did on the copilot's window it takes forever to loosen the glass without breaking it, the original rubber seal makes it much easier. Hope this helps

On my 1977 coach the Ross steering wheel will move a foot each direction with the engine off, but with the engine on the wheel starts turning the tires with less than 1/2 inch of movement. According to the mechanics that have worked on it there is no problem with the steering gear itself, but maybe they are wrong since I too have a bit of a wander problem. I'll crawl under my coach in the next few days but I believe that the steering gear is an HFB64 series. I have no idea if that would be in your coach or not. The model number is cast into the upper side opposite the pitman shaft on my gear. You should be able to easily see it unless you struggle with bifocals like I do and then nothing is in focus.

Saw your message on Newell's tech talk, I own an 1974 Newell Coach and have a BAD wandering problem. I have been working my way towards this problem for two years while fixing other things - I'm finally there. When you message appeared in tech talk you hadn't aligned your Coach yet - if you have, did it help? Mine was aligned and it didn't help. When your engine is turned off does your steering wheel have almost a 1/2 turn of free-play? Mine does. Because of the way the steering box is mounted I cannot get my hands into adjust box. I'm going to remove it and put in my bench vice and try to adjust, or if needed rebuild it. In my mechanic days, very seldom did we have to rebuild them - the adjustment took up all the slack. Besides I could walk right up and tilt the nose on a semi and adjust the steering box - it was all open. Without a model number yet for the Ross steering box I don't have the settings - might have to use my instincts - hopefully there is a model number on the steering box. I don't know how bad yours wanders but mine is all over my lane sometimes. Other than that the Coach is in absolutely beautiful condition. Being able to work on the Coach myself - I just installed quik-snap no glue wood flooring all through the Coach. Appreciate your time and any help you can give. Have a nice day.

Bill

For Rich Farr, the Koni part number is 90 1867, says so right on the box, also "made in Holland." Think it was Gary in Newell parts who provided the number. Also seem to recall the same part number is used on the rear. Apprec Jon's experiences with stiff sliding windows. They slide a lot freer everytime we're in the Southwest due to low humidity. Sounds like no one has a cure yet to free them up without changing the welting. On engine temps, wondering how others are doing with Detroit 92 series at high altitudes on hot days. Rad is a 10 yr old replacement radiator. Still considering removal and having radiator shop give it a full check.

Front end bounce: Previous owner had 2000# of steel weight installed near front axle. He said he did it because it would throw you out of the seat. It rides great, though I had been thinking of removing same until I read some of your messages. Anyone else on this?
Engine overheat: We have a CAT 3208 turbo. Went through a long process, contacting CAT, Bluebird, etc. Finally installed a 6 blade fan (careful you don't get overcharged for one of these) and added extra 1" diameter to tighten up shroud area. Made big difference. Also, we have a water heater with holes for engine water to circulate. Works great, allowing hot showers while on road, and helps cool engine when needed by just running extra hot water during hard climbing. Also, found out the oil cooler was the small size for aspirated engine. Junk yard provided used larger size which I installed.
Flooring: We also have dark wood paneling, but I finally convinced my wife (who wanted to paint it white) that it is a classic color that is now coming back. We did strip out the old carpet and had new light green vinyl put in that really beautified the rig. Vinyl and installation all for $150.
We have redone about everything in this rig to date, and finally feel it is ready for the REALLY long haul.

To power a coach of todayÕs standards off panels offered, it would take about 30-40 panels tied to a major regulator panel to just make out. You would have to fill the entire roof plus panels set all around the coach. There are some major universities working on perfecting solar cells. We need to work on making coaches with all the bennies with half the amperage.

I am wondering what the thought's are on gel vs. the newer AGM batteries for a starting/house system with 4 8D's.

The AGM's are actually about $20.00 less than gel's, but with the price that close, price is not the deciding factor, performance is.

I have had gel's for about 5 years, and have not had a bit of trouble, so I'm not sure if the newer AGM battery's have sufficient history to say they are better or not than gell cells.

What is the opinion here?

1403 7/26/2004 1:54:02 PM 7/26/2004 TechTalk Staff TechTalk@newellcoach.com Batteries, to go Gell or AGM Newell Coach recommends AGM batteries in lieu of the gel cell, and in fact now supplies AGM batteries as
standard equipment on the house bank of our new coaches. From time to time over the last 20 years, we have tried various gel batteries. Each time we tried gel batteries we have been disappointed with their longevity, and each time we discontinued their use due to high
failure rates. Conversly, we have found AGM batteries to be robust and reliable.
The AGM batteries appear well suited to withstand the charging rates of present day high capacity
inverter/chargers. AGM batteries appear to have a significantly longer life than either flooded lead acid or gel batteries. An unexpected bonus appears to be the ability of AGM batteries to store more energy than the same size flooded lead acid or gel batteries, allowing more time between recharging. The only downsides to AGM batteries are cost and availability. Well maintained flooded lead acid batteries give good service, lasting two to five years in a Newell, cost about a third the price of an AGM battery, and are available virtually anywhere.

1418 8/22/2004 4:25:25 PM 8/22/2004 Jon Kabbe jckabbe@earthlink.net Steering Wander Solved There have been a couple messages posted, including mine, regarding steering wander problems with older coaches. After doing three things my coach went from being a bit of a handfull to a real straight lady. I don't know which of the three or some combination that made the difference but I thought I'd share my experience on my 1977 coach. Alignment was not a problem since tire wear patterns were normal and preliminary checks suggested it was right. I changed the steering oil hoses, 75 total feet, since the pressure hose was slightly wet where the hose entered the end fittings. I also lowered the front ride height about an inch since the front was riding higher than the rear. I tried raising the rear but the air bags seemed to have reached their limit. I also adjusted the steering gear at the screw in the middle of the side that adjusts free play. The book as I understand it says to tighten until resistence is met and then back off one turn. Verify this with your own manual as I don't want to be responsible for your rig. I had someone slightly turning the steering wheel back and forth and I found a sweet spot where the turning was most for the least steering wheel movement. Then I drove the coach and found the steering had dramatically improved. I suspect the hoses were the major difference since prior to changing them I could feel a mechanical "thunk" as the steering wheel passed the center position and I no longer feel that with the engine running though I do with the engine off. I could not see anything obvious with the old hoses other than the seepage but I also didn't try to since I was removing them only for the seepage issue. Well, there you go for whatever it's worth.

While adjusting my Koni shocks helped considerably changing the front air bags on my 1977 coach to the current Firestone 9324 bags changed everything. The new bags have a straight bell instead of a tapered one on the old bags. This would make the bounce resistence much more linear. Since I've changed to the new bags I'm actually considering backing off the shock adjustments I made. I also lowered the front ride height about an inch at the same time I changed the air bags but I can't see how that would have changed the ride characteristic, but I could be wrong. Well, there you have my experience for what it is worth.

We found that a late model Newell with three air conditioners, electric element in the Aqua-Hot system, electric refrigerator, an electric cooktop, etc., would operate this generator at near capacity, with a tendency to overheat. Even working with Onan factory engineers, the overheating problem was not resolved. In addition, at higher altitudes, generator performance degrades, and the 12.5 KW capacity was not adequate. All coaches built with Onan Quiet Diesel generators were retrofitted with 17.5 or 20 KW generators.

This feels and sounds low - Is it possible that the tranny is not shifting into sixth gear? Might this be a shift linkage problem? Any thoughts or tips would be appreciated.

Will solor panels keep sufficient charge in batteries to start the engine. If so, how how many or size should have installed and how do I by-pass the disconnect switch?

1440 9/21/2004 12:12:23 PM 9/21/2004 TechTalk Staff TechTalk@newellcoach.com charging of batteries We do not see solar panels installed on very many Newells, as most are stored with electric service available. However, solar panels will normally keep batteries charged in the situation you descibe. Unless you are qualified, the installation of solar panels should be planned and done by an experienced technician. You might start by inquiring with your local RV service shops or do a Google search.

1449 10/1/2004 6:39:47 PM 10/1/2004 TechTalk Staff TechTalk@newellcoach.com 1973 Newell Please understand that, like today, a 1973 Newell was not a "cookie cutter" motorhome. These coaches were available in a variety of specifications, floorplans, etc. In fact, 1973s could be front engine or rear engine, gas or diesel powered, in a variety of lengths from probably as short as 25 feet to 40 feet in length. Indeed, in 1973, a rear engine diesel powered Newell was way ahead of its time, while a front engine gas powered coach was rather conventional for the era. Our best advice is to look carefully at is being offered, have a professional mechanic check it out, and then draw your own conclusions.

1451 10/9/2004 3:16:59 PM 10/9/2004 Bob Fetters jf3brand@idcomm.com 93 Newell We have stumbled across a 93 Newell that we find interesting. As I research other Newell Coaches, I find most are tag axle and longer. This unit is claimed as 38 feet with a single rear axle. I have yet to approach the owner with a request for a closer look, but it even seems narrower than 102 inches. Is any of that possible for a 1993? Is there any listing of specifications for previously produced units?

With the "box" that comes with the coach, you can use 20 -30 or 50 amps. When I store the coach I turn off refrigator and all a/c, heat and fan. Can I just use the 20 amp plug to keep the coach alive. Also, if the coach's batteries are dead, can you jump just the generator. Where are those electric lines for jumping. Finally, if this coach Unit Number 435 needs to be towed, can the tower lift the front end and tow. However, my putting it in neutral will towing hurt the transmission...Thanks for you help

Ken newell classic@aol.com Generator Noise..... Noise Generator? I have 76 and 78 Classics. The 76 has a 7500 watt Kohler gas gen. and does ok, but louder than the 12.5 diesel in the 78. The 76 has 3 40 watt solar panels with a 2k inverter and has no problems keeping up, so I think that might be another option. My 78 with the 12.5 does fine also with 2 airs. I will be adding solar and a 2200 watt Pro-sine inverter. I agree with Newell Tech that a 7500 watt of any type isn't really the ticket for your coach unless you go with some other changes. The big gens are really expensive, thats why I opted for solar and inverter.

I have added a newer improved insulation and now have half the noice on the diesel gen.
