What is the best tow vehicle, 2012-13 Model. Everything I have looked at requires multiple alterations for a 10,000 # Blue Ox.

I first checked out the Chevy Cruze but returned it and GM kicked in an Equinox by giving the dealer help. Now I am looking at towing my old 2008 Suburban 4x4.

I have been quoted 30 to 40 hours labor to get either vehicle ready to tow. At $85.00 per hour plus the tow bar, lights, and modifications I am looking at over $2000.00.

Wow, I just installed demco tow.brackets on my 04 Silverado by myself and I think.the newer ones are even easier. Can't imagine blue ox would be more difficult. Look at their websites.and you can download instructions. Only took an hour.

Your post did not mention base plate. For my 2011 Honda Odyssey, I purchased and installed myself a Roadmaster base plate, air braking system and lights. I suggest you check with Camping World since they specialize in making these installations.

30-40 hours seems a bit much. I have always towed Jeeps. They have a 4wd transfer case with a neutral position. I remove the tail-light housings and add an additional 1157 bulb to the back side of the housing with wires underneath running up to the front for tail/turn/brake light. The lights are not visible unless I hook the plug up to the Newell. Mounting the base plate and adding the taillight wiring shouldn't take more than 8 hours.

I had Blue Ox do the work on my 08 Malibu when I bought it new.

Cost me just under $1000 for the base plate installed, wired the lights ect.

I am seriously considering going back to a van though - possibly a Honda Odyssey and I will install the base plate myself.

Good Luck

Moderator, if you go to a Honda Odssey, you cannot tow the high end Tour model.

We tow a 2005 Jeep Liberty 4x4 and it's been a great tow vehicle.

Need help: I have a 2005 dodge ram 1500 4x4 auto 4 speed trans with transfer case shift in the floor. I have been towing this vehicle for 4 years. I am looking to buy a 2008 dodge ram 1500 4x4 auto 5 speed trans with a electric control shift on the dash. Need help: Can this electric shift be put in neutral to make it tow able? Thanks for your help

Hi Ron,

Yes you can, put the transfer case in neutral, along with the transmission. With the electronic shift there is a small push button (similar to a electronics reset button) that you use.

I will upload the 2008 Dodge Ram user manual for you.

Thanks, This was what I needed to know. I am going to look today. What about a 2011 gmc 2500 4x4 auto 6sp with electronic shift? I know the 1500 is tow able but the 2500 does not list as being able to tow. Thank again for your help.

Hi Ron,

Here is the owners manual 2011 gmc 2500 4x4

From what I can find I would say yes it is towable, Most are according to GM. Below you will find the owners manual attached.
