1827 12/1/2005 7:46:00 PM 12/3/2005 Reagan Sirmons overcup@houston.rr.com Building a RV park... The RV parks that were in New Orleans were the pits. If it rained, you could literally be stranded in your coach on the pad. They were over-rated and disappointing. However, I agree with the previous comment stating the one hour drive would be too long to endure simply for the sake of staying in Houma in a nicer place if the intent was to go to New Orleans. There are two nice places on the North side of Ponchatrain. You would need to sell Houma for Houma's sake.

1841 12/5/2005 2:39:25 PM 12/5/2005 Jon Kabbe jonlt@charter.net Inside wheel wells? By looking at the pictures of coaches in the early 80's compared to my 1977 coach it looks like there is more distance from the top of the wheel well cut-out to the rub rail just above it. Also those same coaches have the swivel chairs in the front seeming to sit on the floor rather than on top of the wheel wells as they are on mine. As more pictures accumulate we may be able to identify the exact year but it has to be around 1980 when the floor was raised.

On an older coach without a steering tag, there are variations depending on the year and suspension, so it would be best to measure if this is critical.

Some coaches in 1979 and 1980 were built this way on special order. The height of the underfloor bays varied prior to 1981, then was about 28 inches from 1981 through 1989, and went to about 30 inches from 1990 to present.

1860 12/15/2005 7:11:44 AM 12/15/2005 chuck ulinski cau35@aol.com Paint A message from Newell Service states: "typical of two-stage paints, the paint does not have the chip resistance of Newell's standard clear coated single-stage Imron." Is this the paint system that I have on my '85 Newell?

Q
1861 12/15/2005 11:00:55 AM 12/15/2005 TechTalk Staff TechTalk@newellcoach.com Paint The 1985 Newels were originally painted with single stage DuPont Imron without clear coat. In the mid to late 1990s, the Imron finish typically was clear coated. Beginning with late 2002 models, new Newells have been painted with a base coat/clear coat system. The base coat/clear coat system provides a smoother finish with a "wet look," and can be spot repaired. It is not as resistent to chipping as single stage paint, so Newell installs a paint protectant shield on the front.

1862 12/15/2005 1:58:25 PM 12/16/2005 chuck ulinski cau35@aol.com Paint My '85 Newell looks like a clear coat is separating from the color. The drivers side was re-done recently, as told by the prior owner Leroy Johnson. He said that it was fine sanded and clear coat reapplied -- it looks great but the front and the curb side looks like a "clear coat" is peeling. I'm unsure how that reckons with the TechTalk Staff message that: "The 1985 Newels were originally painted with single stage DuPont Imron without clear coat."

1865 12/17/2005 10:54:53 AM 12/17/2005 TechTalk Staff TechTalk@newellcoach.com zf suspension Coaches 671, 681, and 685 were the first Newells to utilize ZF
suspension while the prior suspension system was used in other units built at this time. Then all Newells starting with 722 were built with ZF suspension. To date, we have completed about 75 coaches with ZF suspension. It provides an excellent ride, very stable handling characteristics, and with the steering tag axle, a very short turning radius, about 37 feet on a 45-foot coach.

Q
1870 12/21/2005 4:59:35 AM 12/21/2005 TechTalk Staff TechTalk@newellcoach.com Paint The cost can vary greatly. The variables include the complexity of the paint design, the number of colors, whether it is a duplicate of what is already on the coach, which sometimes can be done without stripping the old paint, or a new design, which normally requires stripping, etc. Further, most coaches over ten years old require at least some body repair when repainting. To get the best results, the Newell factory paint department normally strips a coach to bare metal and repaints using the newer base coat/clear coat system instead of the older single stage paint. In most cases, the customer elects to repaint using a design typical of our current new coaches rather than applying a design from an older era. A repaint including selection of a current design, stripping the coach, and using four colors is approximately $29,000, with the caveat that there are often extra cost add-ons requested to the work. The Newell paint department is often booked up weeks in advance, so we are in the process of completing an additional state-of-the-art paint booth to offer more customers factory fresh repaints. Anyone wishing to consider a new paint job from the Newell paint department can discuss the particulars including estimated cost with the department manager, Jerry Allen, at 1-888-3NEWELL.

This is the chance to clear up some of the many questions that we all may have about the Newell lifestyle. 1878 12/31/2005 5:49:18 AM 12/31/2005 TechTalk Staff TechTalk@newellcoach.com air pocket doors Your coach is equipped with three air compressors: 1) an engine-driven compressor that services the entire system anytime the engine is running, 2) a 110-volt compressor that services the entire system when the engine is not running, from electric power supplied by the shore cord or generator, or from the inverter when a 110-volt source is not available, and 3) a 12-volt air compressor that supplies the toilet and certain other selected other small accessories when sources 1) or 2) above are not functioning. From your description, it appears that for some reason the 110-volt air compressor is not supplying air as designed. In short, it appears your 110-volt air compressor system needs to be repaired.

1880 12/31/2005 9:38:59 AM 12/31/2005 TechTalk Staff TechTalk@newellcoach.com air pocket doors The quick answer to when the 110-volt compressor was connected to an inverted circuit is sometime between 1994 and now, but we'll check our records and see if we can identify the date. The reason some air powered items do not operate when the 12-volt compressor is the only source of air is that this compressor is of limited capacity and is plumbed to pressurize only a selected list of components. This list has always included the toilet, but apparently the air doors were not included in 1995. Since then, the air doors have been added to the items powered by the 12-volt compressor. Another key system that operates from the 12-volt compressor is the air seals on slide-out coaches. The whole idea is to provide a reasonable level of functionality even when neither the engine is running nor a primary source of 110-volt power is available.

1884 1/5/2006 5:01:18 AM 1/5/2006 TechTalk Staff TechTalk@newellcoach.com Carpet and Tile Estimates for work of this type must be considered on a case-by-case basis. There are a great many variables, such as the quality of carpet chosen, the floorplan of the coach, whether portions of the floor are tiled, etc. Newell installs very high quality Fabrica carpet, about $70/yd retail, in all new coaches. However, this quality level of carpet is not necessarily an appropriate choice for recarpeting a 15-year-old coach unless the owner wishes. In any case, the Newell Service Department would be happy to discuss issues of this type and provide information on costs as they relate to a particular coach and the owner's preferences and expectations. 1896 1/15/2006 4:47:49 PM 1/17/2006 Donnell Cameron dadcameron@earthlink.net 1978 Newell Overheat Thanks to Boyd Vanover for his response re: the overheating problem of our coach which we bought in Canada last summer. He did mention that certain models around that era had temp gauges which read slightly high [Editor's note: If the temp gauge reads higher when the headlights are on, add a dedicated ground wire from the temp gauge]. Also, if operating temperatures are excessively high, the engine would stop automatically if the shut down system is operating correctly.
Cummins West in Bakersfield repaired the problem by removing the rear mounted radiator and cleaning the exterior surfaces and reinstalling. Now, temperature never exceeds 190 degrees F whereas before it would exceed 250 going uphill at low speed.
Thanks for the tips.

I think it was around 2002 or so, but exactly which coach number did they start with (again, excluding the California models)? After some point (coach #) all the coaches had them.

1899 1/16/2006 7:10:44 PM 1/17/2006 Ken & Pat Molloy ken@molloys.org Carrying Capacity 1990-1994 You can obtain this for yourself by weighing your coach twice. First weigh the coach with empty tanks and no consumables on board ("Dry" weight). Second, weigh it again with all fuel, water and propane tanks full ("Wet" weight). Third, subtract the "wet" weight from the Maximum GVW on the VIN placard. The difference will be how much you can carry. Fully loaded, you might want to weigh it one more time, but this time weigh the front and rear axles separately to make sure the load is properly distributed. A real "fussbudget" might even weigh it left side and right side to be sure of proper distribution. I always preferred about 500 to 1,000 pounds more on the left than on the right because of the crown of the road.
We once looked at the literature for a micro-minimotorhome built on a Toyota chassis. Its "dry" weight was only 50 pounds less than the GVW! Just filling the gasoline tank would overload it -- not to mention the weight of the passengers and the consumables normally carried on board!

The front axle in particular should never be downrated with Load Range G tires. In the real world, our experience with Bridgestone 11R24.5 Load Range H tires, properly inflated and maintained, and operated within the speed rating, has been exceptionally good, with coaches operating reliably even loaded up to 10 above the rated load capacity.

None of the Caterpillar powered Newells have EGR valves, as Caterpillar uses a different technology with a catalytic converter that they refer to as ACERT.

1916 1/27/2006 7:43:10 AM 1/28/2006 TechTalk Staff TechTalk@newellcoach.com Rear Reflector Lights on 96 Newell While conversion to the newer design tail lights requires a one-time rework of the wiring, there are long term benefits from making this change. The old design contained sealed individual light and reflector units, requiring the replacement of the lens and the reflector, when a bulb failed. The replacement units allow for individual bulb replacements, versus replacing the lens and reflector every time a bulb failed. This means a long term cost savings for our cutomer. If some advice is needed for the wiring changes required, call the Newell Service Department toll free at 1-888-3NEWELL.

I am the owner of a 1966 StreamLine and it was wonderful to see my coach on the history legacy page. My thanks to Tom Patterson for his web-site that ultimately brought me into Newell. Twenty years ago, the story I got was that Mr. Newell wanted Streamline to custom build a luxery coach for him and their refusal led to the challenge, buy the company and build it yourself. Anyway, I liked the story and it doesn't really matter does it? [Editor's note: The story of Mr. Newell buying the motorhome division of Streamline in 1967 is essentially true. However, it was not because Streamline refused to build a coach for Mr. Newell. Streamline actually built the coach, and Mr. Newell took delivery. But according to legend (and perhaps true), Mr. Newell commented critically to Streamline's owner regarding certain aspects of his new Steamline coach. Streamline's owner responded, "If you are so smart, why don't you just buy my motorhome division." As they say, the rest is history, ironically with Streamline staying in the trailer business until about 1972 when they went broke.]

1921 1/29/2006 9:00:37 AM 1/30/2006 TechTalk Staff TechTalk@newellcoach.com replacing appliances As a general rule, appliances, including refrigerators, can be replaced through the entry door. However, Newell will do a wide range of customization, so it is possible that a coach is equipped with an appliance that will not go through the entry door. It is also possible that an appliance can be removed through the entry door, but that it would be difficult. In this case, we recommend that consideration be given to removing a windshield. Removing and replacing a slide-out is not recommended. This requires an experienced Newell technician, and involves perhaps 30 hours of labor.

1922 1/29/2006 11:28:01 AM 1/30/2006 TechTalk Staff TechTalk@newellcoach.com Diesel smell in storage and coach. There are a number of components in the diesel fuel system of an Aqua-Hot. If a leak occurs, a fiberglass mat on the floor of the unit can become
saturated with diesel and will need to be removed once the underlying leak is diagnosed and corrected. Perhaps more important: it is recommended by Aqua-Hot that the entire system be serviced annually by a trained technician. This item is included on Newell's recommended periodic maintenance schedule. Newell's can receive complete recommended period maintenance, including the Aqua-Hot system, at the factory service center in Miami. If this is not a practical option, the periodic service schedule is included in the Newell Owner's Manual. The most current version is available by mail or fax by calling the Newell Service Department at 1-888-3NEWELL. A
