1218 2/4/2004 10:09:46 AM 2/5/2004 Don Koenig donkoenig@juno.com Guages & Shutdown My 1984 with a Detriot 8V92 has wires at the rear terminal panel labelled "engine oil temperature" & "transmission temperature". Wires with the same markings are labelled "open" on the front terminal. I can see a sensor in the oil pan so what is the proper guage for oil temperature and the proper guage for transmission temperature? Guages have to match the sensor for accurate readings.
A switch on the dashboard is labelled "override". What does this spring loaded normally closed switch control? Detriot diesel documentation mentions a "hot wire relay" in the shutdown loop prior to 1988. Is such a relay used and where is it? I ask because a normally open high temperature sensor is on the driver side of the engine. It is provided power by the engine battery ( from the rear panel terminal labelled "Ignition fuel valve")and the output is wired to the shutdown solenoid. I do not see how a high temperature shutdown can be "overriden" on my coach. The high temperature sensor is not the original so some prior owner might have defeated the prior "override" capability. The orignal high temperature sensor would illumunate the high temperature light on the dash. Did that same wire go to a "hot wire relay" somewhere? I would like to restore the "override" capability if I can.

Are you referring to the relay used to shut down the engine when the ignition key is turned off? If so, have you consulted a Detroit Diesel servicing dealer? The Series 60 fuel system, including the shut down relay, has proven very reliable over the years, and we suspect you have some malfunction requiring the attention of a qualified Detroit Diesel technician.

1235 2/21/2004 8:47:28 PM 2/21/2004 Brion Johnston nmbjohnston@aol.com Newell Classic As of today (2/21) there is a 1975 33' coach on E-bay out of Portales, NM. After looking at the pictures, I can tell you my 1979 inside and outside is very similar to it, and it would be similar to others in the 1978 - 81 range. It has a Cummins 555 engine, 4 speed transmission, and single rear axle.

My coach is a 36" model, and my wife and I love it. Good luck on your hunt!

My '78 had the old vacuum c. control with a separate 12V vacuum pump just to support it. When it quit I bought a new totally electric unit that didn't require vacuum or air. Around $180.00. I can't remember where I got it but I believe it was made by Dana. It has it's own Little "stalk" that mounts independant of the signal lever.Since my Newell is in winter storage I cant get more info at the moment.

1238 2/26/2004 1:16:41 PM 2/26/2004 Jon Kabbe jckabbe@earthlink.net 77 Coach Heater Boost Pump I thought I would update whoever is interested in my installation of a boost pump in the engine coolant circuit that feeds the heaters.

My system is 1/2" copper pipe. I bought a 1" Bergstrom pump and installed in the hose just downstream from the engine water pump outlet. I connected it electrically to a solenoid that was left vacant in the right rear electrical panel when the Bendix cruise control was removed. That way I didn't need to run a heavier wire all the way from the front not did I put significant load on the ignition switch that already has too much load on it.

Now as soon as the engine shows the slightest heat I can have heat up front even at low engine speeds. I didn't have this before installing the pump even though I thoroughly flushed all the lines. I still may have a restriction but I doubt it. At high engine speeds I can turn the pump off and it makes no noticeable difference in the front heater output. I suspect the oversize pump doesn't make a restriction when turned off. I would like to take credit for being so smart but it was just dummb luck.

On a recent winter trip I was still chilly while on the road in temperatures below 20 degrees. Not bad but not comfortable either. Then I discovered that my main entry door was slightly bowed outwards in the middle. I added a little foam weatherstrip and what a difference. We cruised home in 20 degree weather with only the defroster on by mistake and were almost entirely comfortable.

Lessons learned: the pump will help heat get to you earlier and eliminating air leaks will definitely help keep the heat in. I can send a picture of the pump setup if anyone is interested.

All the best to Newell for a great coach even when it is old enough to have voted in the last election.

1240 2/26/2004 6:17:34 PM 2/26/2004 Tony Combs combsandmore@aol.com air brakes I have a 1975 Newell motorcoach. It has the wedge style air brakes. Is there any way to adjust the brakes. It pulls left on hard braking and sometimes locks the left front wheel. When I am pulling a heavy load, they seem to fade and take excessive braking pressure. The pulling fades also until they cool down. The coach had new shoes and drums when I purchased it in May 2003. Any help would be appreciated.

1242 2/27/2004 7:35:31 AM 2/27/2004 TechTalk Staff TechTalk@newellcoach.com air brakes Your coach has manual slack adjusters. They should be checked and
adjusted on a regular basis. Most heavy duty truck shops are capable of
doing this procedure, and it normally takes a matter of minutes. If
your brakes are not adjusted properly you can experience the pulling
and fading that you describe. Another indicator that your brakes need adjustment is a reduction in the
effectiveness of the parking brake to hold the coach on a slope. Late model coaches have automatic slack adjusters. However, even the automatic adjusters should be checked occasionally to confirm they are working properly.

1243 2/27/2004 6:24:30 PM 2/28/2004 Tim Durham timdur@cox.net coach height I am taking delivery of a 2000 45' 8" unit. Have a 40 X 70 building with door opening of 12' 3". Not large enough for my coach with a ride height of 13' to the top of the dome at road height. Dumping all air brings the coach to 12' 9". But dumping the air and driving even slowly can be hazardous to tire sidewalls if there is not enough clearance in the fender wells. Newell claims that if you are on level ground and pull straight in or out that you should not rub the sidewalls. Don't count on it though. My solution - big bucks to enlarge the building on an existing slab, with a door opening of 13' 8".

1244 2/28/2004 7:04:00 AM 2/28/2004 TechTalk Staff TechTalk@newellcoach.com coach height If the fender wells are too tight to move the coach with the air dumped (typically, only the drive axle tires are an issue), material can be removed from the inner edges of the fender moldings to provide the needed clearance. However, if your door opening is only 12' 3", the coach with a satellite dome is not going to fit. Either removing the DSS dome or modifying the building will probably be required.

1271 4/3/2004 7:42:59 AM 4/3/2004 TechTalk Staff TechTalk@newellcoach.com New Tires Refer to our comments added to the message above dated 12/4/04. For tire brands and types where "steer axle" tires are offered, they offer better wear characteristics than "drive axle" tires. However, for some tire types, including the 315R22.5 Michelin Pilot tires currently fitted as standard equipment on new Newells, special steer axle tires are not considered necessary by the tire manufacturer and are not offered. Bottom line: if the tire type you are offering offers a special steer axle version, buy it, as the drive axle version would probably experience uneven wear problems if mounted in front. But if none is available, it is an indication that the tire is suitable for all positions.

I know I have to upgrade the charger to something that knows about AGM batteries and their voltage requirements. However, I'm concerned about what happens when the batteries are 'merged' with the chassis batteries (which will remain flooded wet cell) while driving.

Has anyone done this and if so, how did you insure the house batteries didn't get overcharged while driving? What about simply taking the 'merge' solenoid out of the picture by unwiring it so the batteries couldn't merge? Lastly, is there something I need to change on the generator to make it aware of the AGM batteries?

2. I haven't found a good way to brighten up the dark formica either. Ours still doesn't show any wear so I hate to cover it up!
3. Yeah, seat belts would be great. The only way I know of to install them would be to use updated seat pedastels.
4. I wonder if the welting in the windows could be replaced. That's all that's wrong with mine. At $200.00 or more per window for new ones it would be worth it to R/B these if possible.

1314 6/5/2004 10:55:21 AM 6/6/2004 Bill wrssr@msn.com Sharing Info with classic owners! Dean, I have a 1974 Newell. The inside is real dark from the formica walls, somebody suggested that I put in the light colored QuickStep 800 Uniclic flooring. Having never installed flooring before took me about 3 1/2 weeks to complete from start to finish. Stripped carpet from between drivers seats to back bedroom. Found out there was linoleum all through coach which was a good thing for this new style flooring - creates a vapor barrier. Had to remove linoleum in a couple of spots because it had raised because of its age which is normal. Had a couple of rotten spots in hall by bathroom - went back to my old bodyman days - instead of using wood filler, which I knew wasn't strong enough, I used fiberglass "kittyhair", which is the apoxy mixed with chopped matting. Used an air grinder and sanded smooth. Than I had to pull the 1001 staples used to put carpet in. Out here in the northwest, becasue of the 4 seasons, when ready for the new flooring, I laided down 2 layers of #4 plastic, then laid down uniclic's plastic membrane and then started laying the flooring. Because of Newell's rounded corners, it took longer to round the corners on the flooring so it would look right, and because of uniclic's 1/4" expansion gap all the way around the flooring, it took a while. The flooring came out absolutely beautiful. The first thing I noticed when done and cleaned - because of the light oak flooing, and I mean "light", it light up the dark formica paneling and actually enhanced it. During the day the light from the windows hit the flooring and lights up the walls and everything. When its dark out I turn on the lights in the coach same thing happens. I highly recommend it. Like you, I was thinking about painting the walls - but I knew I had to find a primer to paint on the formica - haven't been able to find a primer that would hold - in time it would probably peel. Picking up pictures of what I done today. If you want pictures can scan and e-mail to you. Bill

Although all three basement a/c units work okay at present, I am more comfortable with roof units. So, we very recently put two Duo-Therm 11,000 BTU low profile roof units on our coach and had the covers painted the same color as the coach. The units cool just fine at 95 degrees and below and I use the basement units only if I need to. Really like the Duo Therm roof units and they are not nearly as noisy as some. And unless the basement condenser coils are totally eaten up from internal acid, they can usually be repaired. Regards, Carl

1319 6/7/2004 9:36:25 PM 6/10/2004 Raul Cortez raul-cortez@sbcglobal.net New Tires I just bought new tires for my 1995 Newell Coach and I bought Bridgestone R293 24.5 Load Range H. The H rating is 16 ply versus the G rating which is 14 ply. The G rated tire is most popular at tire dealers. You have to order in the H rated tire and will take a couple of extra days to come in. A potential buyer of my coach noticed a thumping sound when we were test driving the coach. He walked to the bedroom and noticed a thumping sound coming from the drive axle area. I didn't feel right selling the coach with tires that could potential blow out at any given time, so I replaced them with the Bridgestone R293 Load range H. This also solved the thumping sound that was caused by an inside drive axle tire that had bad cupping. We couldn't see it while it was installed on the coach. Once it was off the wheel....you could tell how bad the tire was and right away I new that was causing the thumping. I feel much better about selling my coach now that it has the new tires.

1322 6/9/2004 4:05:02 PM 6/10/2004 William Griffith guzzi@bayou.com 1974 Newell We have a 78 Newell that "had" a 555 Cummins (214hp WHEN NEW). We felt that the 555 was sluggish on take off and terribly under powered. While it will eventually get up the hills, it will take a while and after everything else passes you. When we had problems (blown engine) we found that the 555 is an old out-dated engine, few machanics know how to work on it, parts are not readily available and to rebuild the top end would be over $13K. The coach is otherwise in excellent condition, with everthing in good working order and we got it at a great price so we opted to upgrade to a 6V92 (350hp) Detroit diesel. Of course, in doing this, we had to change the transmission and rear end (that had to be custom built because the rear end company was out of business). We will end up paying more for the change over than the rebuild but hopefully the increase in horsepower will be worth it. If you have any other questions that I can help you with, please let me know. William

My 77 coach has Koni's on the front that were set to the lowest setting and I had the same bounce you mentioned. After I launched my wife a couple times I decided a change was needed. I adjusted the shocks to the number 3 setting and a noticeable reduction in bounce occurred. I'm thinking of trying the number 5 setting just to see what happens. The shocks can be adjusted by loosening the top end and following the Koni instructions. I too am working with a wander problem. My toe-in is currently set at zero and we'll begin working some toe-in in when the shop gets their alignment equipment working. They will also verify the caster as they said that can be a problem as well. My coach has some spring style centering gizmo that didn't make any difference when I removed it. Two questions:
1) If I ground the left-hand tail light, both sides light up. Is that just because they are wired together? Seemed kinda odd.
2) Where in the heck is the brake light switch??? Nothing under the dash and nothing visible through the cutout for the brake master cylinder.

Any ideas? - Thanks!!
