Preparing for our cross country trip and was wondering if there are downloads for GPS's that will help with staying off of Parkway's and other roads that are not supposed to be used by large motor homes. Have had many problems with this in the past, especially when getting around large city's. The GPS I have now is a Garmin nuvi. Is there anything for this brand, or does any other make something similar to what I am searching for?

Hello Scott, Steve here,

A trucker model of GPS will probably have a routing option to avoid car-only parkways, but most do not. Another option is to purchase a truckers map which has all low clearances listed on a state by state basis.

Scott, I have a Rand-McNally 9910 which is designed to do what you want. However, the screen is hardly visible on a bright day, but I understand that their new model 9920 has improved the screen brightness. Also, Garmin has a new unit that will also do what you want (Garmin Diesel), but I cannot use it since it does not have an external antenna. I suggest you stop by a Camping World store to see the latest. I have not heard of any downloads for the Garmin nuvi to do what you want. Good luck.

I have the Garmin nuvi 465T which is designed for trucks but can be used by cars as well. The setting allows me to set the height of my coach and overall length of the newell and truck to avoid roads that I have no business being on. I picked it up for 260.00 at Camping World. I did however find a link to amazon who is selling this GPS for 219.00

Hutchinson River Parkway in NY. Passenger cars only - no trucks or trailers allowed. There are several older parkways in NY and CT like that.

Forgot to mention there are several mapping programs for PC's.. Streets & Trips, Rand McNalley, CO-Pilot (which is designed for truckers) Delorme and more.. all have the option of a GPS receiver which plugs in the usb port.

Michael, I am interested in the Garmin Dezl, but it does not provide for an external antenna, which seems to require one to place it close to the windshield. When you try it out, use it on a bright day and let us know if the screen is clearly visible in bright sunlight. I have my Rand-McNally mounted overhead near the tire monitor to provide some shade, but need an external antenna if I switch to the Garmin.
