I am wondering how people feel about the power of their coach. I have seen older newells with 275hp and newer newells with 600hp. If you have a newell coach and tow a car or small truck, what should one expect for performance from the various engines. I am thinking mountain performance and I don't enjoy poking along at a snails pace but realize I will likely be under the speed limit in some situations. Would like to hear from owners how they feel about their HP.

Gettin' up the hill fast is not gonna happen with any coach. But remember the real problem is coming down. With 40,000# or more (way more) you want to come down slowly so you don't burn up your brakes.
My 1993 39' with 8v92 & 500 hp towing 6500# goes up at 35mph in second gear. About the same speed as truckers and most all other big coaches.

I agree with Forest! Going up isn't as important as going down. Must Gear Down to stay in the Power Band

I am very satisfied with the 500hp Detroit 60, and agree with Forest. Speed climbing a mountain is not the issue, coming down is. Going up, keeping the RPMs up is more important than speed to keep the engine cool, and Jake brake is essential coming down a mountain.

I have to agree with all that has been said thus far. Remember take your time it's more important to arrive at your destination than to be a speed racer and chance an accident. In the end the faster vs slower speed doesn't make the saving worth while when speaking of your life and such or others around you.

Relax and enjoy the ride you'll get there soon enough,

Once you get the feel for your coach you will be comfortable with the power. Yes, coming down burning up the brakes is a mistake you do not want to make. I have seen several truckers and RVers doing this not knowing what the heck they're doing. Shake my head every time! It's important you don't put yourself or others on the road in danger. Driving smart and safely is key.

With 625HP Power has never been an issue I just need to learn to keep my foot out of it .

I'm extremely satisfied with our Newells power, along the smooth ride. No complaints here!

My last Newell was equipped with a cummins 555 and horribly underpowered in my opinion. When we start talking series 60 that is a whole new ball game. Series 60 engines are more fuel efficient and with plenty of horse power. The series 60 will be a requirement in my next newell unless of course my wife gets her way and we move overseas.

My 73 had a normally aspirated Cat 1160, it got 12mpg w/o toad and 10mpg w/toad. May not have been fast, but it went everywhere I tried to take it, and it would still pass a gas motor home pulling a toad. I would have liked more HP on a few occasions, but I have the same issue with my car and truck...

I always appreciate power and torque. Cummins is the king of the hill up or down! Especially the ISX engines. When running those engines I have rarely ever had to use the air brakes while using the Jake. Great compression and engine size = better exhaust braking. Size does matter! Larger displacement diesel engines don't work as hard either, and many times yielding better fuel economy.

Something to know, is stab breaking! Saves brake linings and lives.

In my honest opinion it's better to have power to spare. Who wants to be creeping along? ;)
