I've noticed that every Newell I've seen online and in person none are equipped with an oven, Why is that? Reason I ask is that in our home we enjoy cooking with our convection oven. Is this something that can be installed moderately easy and if so whats the cost?

Birdman, my assumption would be that the majority of new owners don't plan on doing much baking. I don't even think that most new buyers even full time in a Newell. It is the second, third or fourth owners and so on that might have a wife that wants to bake while living full time on the road.

Most of the classics had LPG ranges in them and then after the 2000 Series came out things started to change. When microwave/convection's became available, many manufacturers including Newell went standard with them. By going to a cook top and convection/microwave, the manufacturers have created much desired extra storage. Not just on the inside but with no LPG left additional basement storage.

Personally we have contemplated doing the same thing with an older coach but decided against it. We no longer have a desire for a microwave, but the convection aspect of it; a resounding yes!

This is just my humble opinion.

Being a fulltimer & someone who likes to cook, I use the the microwave/convection combo all the time. As an example, I frequently cook a small 1.5 lb pork roast. the normal cooking time is 1 Hr. Microwave/convection combo is 27 minutes. I've probablly cooked 30 of these over the years & I'm still here so I guess it's OK.
Today, I baked a cake & also baked Chedar Bay biscuits & all came out perfect.
Combo baking is best when you use preprogramed setting on the unit OR stuff you cook frequently & willing to work with the combo time till you get it right!

LOL, that your still Gordon, that's a good sign.rollinglol I don't think nuking the meat does it much harm anyway, it probably still retains its protein content. That is great how much you have cooked and baked in your coach. I have to believe you fall into that second group I am referring to.

My brother used to be right next to his microwave all the time and he ended up dying from a brain tumor at 52 years old. Don't know how much that attributed to things, but it couldn't of helped. He thought it was what done him in. Now I don't know how much exposure one gets from the convection/microwave combo mode as opposed to using it on microwave only? They use those convection/microwaves at Costco and other stores for their food samples.

In my home I have a non-microwave type convection and it cooks pretty darn fast without the microwave. I still have a separate microwave, but don't really use it except here and there to heat up coffee or tea. Usually use a hot pot for heating smaller amounts of water vs. a tea pot. Much quicker while using less electicity.

Ken,
A convection oven is nothing more than a regular oven with a fan to circulate the heat! it's thats simple. On my unit, it is a heating element and fan intregrated into the back of the regular microwave. There is no radiation used in a convection oven.
The setting control the function: microwave only, convection only, combo bake which is 10% micro+convection and combo roast 40% micro+convection. Actual nothing more than a toaster oven with convection(FAN) & a microwave.
I don't ever remember seeing a Combo unit in a house, only in motorhomes. Infact, I'm not sure I remember anyone using the combo setting until I explained it to them.
I have seen convection ovens in a house's that have buttons for bake convection & roast convection. The difference is that bake convection only uses the lower element & roast uses the upper & lower element together with the fan.33933394

Baking in the combo mode takes a little learning as it is more delicate, but as you can see I've mastered at least these 2 items

You're quite the little chef there. At least I know if we cross paths I'll get dessert with my beverage. That looks mighty tasty.

Maybe my understanding of those combo units is out of whack, it wouldn't be a first time. :banghead: I was going by what I had heard from an appliance salesman telling me that they used microwave and convection at the same time in the combo mode, so I figured they must put off some radiation while the microwave portion was going. I do understand that little fans in the back of the oven creates like a vortex and moves the hot air around evenly. I love the way a convection cooks roasts and turkey, it's totally amazing compared to a regular oven. The moisture retained it the meat is excellent.

My significant other wants me to replace the dishwasher with an oven. I am reluctant to do so since I suspect a better knowledge of how to use the microwave/convection would be a better solution. Need to look for a more specific cook book than the one that comes with the coach.

Chester,
I've tried to find a book that would convert cooking times for a regular oven to a COMBINATION oven, but to no avail. I did purchase a book"Energy Efficient Kitchen", but it was a waste of money!
Actually, I would start with the user manual that came with the microwave. There should be some set programs for Bake & Roast Combination that you should try as a test.
Might try the pork for roast setting. Use a thermoter when you're do to confirm. A 2 lb roast in my unit needs 35 minutes.
If you like biscuits, try a bag of the Rhodes frozen dinner rolls. Follow directions for defrosting.
The directions for baking call for 350 deg 15-20 minutes; convection oven 325 deg 10-15 minutes.
Using my Auto bake function #3, I actually put the the rolls in during the preheat cycle. When the oven signals that it is ready to put the rolls in, I open & close the door and then set the timer to 4 minutes and press the start button. In 4 minutes the rolls are perfectly done.

And they say I'm not a green person!

PS I'm @ 2400 ft, so your time may vary
not all rolls are baked the same

Cooks.com - Recipe - Oven Fried Chicken Thighs (http://www.cooks.com/rec/doc/0,1929,150169-236194,00.html)

While on the subject, this is a microwave only dish for Oven Fried Chicken Thighs. I use 6 med boneless, skinless thighs. Also I only cook for 7 minutes each time.
Almost all my cooking is done with a minimun amount of pots & pans as I am the diswasher.

I use my Gaggenau electric cooktop the most. But when I want to roast or bake something I have found using my Sharp Microwave/Convection Oven works just fine. I stay away from using the microwave part of it and only use the convection oven. (My sister gave me the whole spill on how using a microwave isn't good for your health)

Like Gordon shows from his photos the convection works great taking the place of an oven. Most of the time I have my coach fully cleaned and detailed but when I need to clean up after cooking something in the convection oven, it's nice because there is little cleaning to be done if a spill or over flow happens. Something to consider if you're older as well would be bending over to clean an oven.\

And if all else fails I eat out! ;)

What are your thoughts on this convection oven?

We have the GE Advantium microwave halogen oven. We have no complaints it works fantastic. That along with our Kenyon ceramic electric two burner cook top it's plenty for the two of us. When we had our stick built home we only ever used two burners anyway. :)
