Hi all,

We are getting ready to purchase a marine type hot water heater from running the engine or electric. Does anyone have any experiences with different types of water heaters out there or are they all about the same? We are looking at an 12 gallon tank seaward tank and just thought I would ask around first before buying.

I believe Prairieschooner put one in his Classic.
I had the Raritan 20 gallon in my '93 and it worked great, especially once I changed the electric to 2000 watt element. Common domestic water heater element.

items to keep in mind when looking for a marine HW heater.

The internal water holding tank should be SS or Aluminum, glass lined has a shorter life.

The heater should have an element overheat breaker , so if the electric is on and the tank is/gets empty , its a simple reset.

In order to attempt to moderate the FW temp (which can get to 180-200F) some units will have a bypass.

Many do not by pass , they simply restrict the flow.

These suck if anything (like a box heater) is on the same feed circuit. It will slow the circ water and the heater will have no output.

Since the hot water is close to 180F , the on board use of a thermostated mixing valve is good insurance.

I have a Raratin 20 gallon in my Liberty it is great and I adjust it to 160 degrees when my wife is in the coach because she takes long showers. It is very good and I think that it is the way to go as long as you are not dry camping.
