forest, i would be suprised if your speedo was mechanical. (sorry richard). mine is electrical. and am a couple of years older than yours.

there is a hall effect transducer on the back right by the rear end. if you go my post on adjusting my cruise control sensor, it shows a picture.

there are two sensors, and they are both identical other than one is for the cruise and one is for the speedo. the speedo one is on the bottom and the cruise is on the top.

if there is something wrong it is either out of adjustment (you gap it like points) with a feeler gauge. i believe it was 30 thousandths, but i dont remember for sure. the other option is that it is bad, but my guess is that is unlikely.
