Cliff: I bought some awing cleaner from a local awning maker and found that it took several cycles of washing and rinsing to get things relatively clean. The best way I found was to remove the awning cloth from the awning metal parts (tedious but not hard) and throw it in a washing machine. The problem with that approach is that some of the thread broke down and needed restitching.
